This concept has already been discussed. The Canes aren't selling off their expansion exempt, 21 year old, 6'3", 200 lbs, all-situations top-4 RHD. If they traded him it would be for a clear top-line scorer (which he isn't currently worth).

No. The Canes have two more-or-less singular needs:

*They need a top-line F, ideally a C, to build their offense around. The Canes have a solid support cast upfront, but nobody to lead the offense and none in the pipeline.

*They need a goalie that can backstop them as a viable contender, even if just short-term until Nedeljkovic or one of our other G specs steps up and takes the starting job.

Without those two things, the Canes aren't going anywhere as a team. While we might move one or more of our surplus defensemen eventually...it's going to be to fulfill one of those needs. This offer does neither.

The Sabres don't have anything to offer to get a guy like Pesce (or any of Hanifin, Slavin or Faulk) out of Carolina without putting the centerpieces of their own rebuild on the table. As Aho Mitakuye Oyasin said...Pesce's not worth that, yet or possibly ever, but it doesn't mean we're moving him for spare parts.

The only trade that makes sense is Hanifin for Reinhart.

Even that doesn't interest me. I don't think Hanifin is expendable and I don't think Reinhart is worth anything near Hanifin's value. I think he's a top-2C spec and we can acquire one a lot cheaper than this.

No interest in moving Hani unless we're adding a ton and getting Eichel; a legit 1C spec.

I'd say their values would be fairly close.

I think it's pretty tough to argue Hanifin > Reinhart. Hanifin hasn't really done anything to set himself apart, they both put together solid rookie campaigns.

Jesus Christ Reinhart is the most underrated player in the history of hockey.

He has the same rookie year Dylan Larkin had...one is a superstar the other a scrub.
