Dialect people - help me!

Doug MacLean, back when he was on the radio all the time, used to very clearly say "De-TROY-it", instead of what I'm familiar with (which rhymes with Jon Voight).

I've heard a couple other Canadian broadcasters do the same thing.

Is that a Canadian thing? A "some Canadians" thing? Or I'm I just going crazy and these "two" pronunciations are completely splitting hairs and are basically the same?
