nice pickup since it just costs money, very interested to see how he does as Quinnipiac played such a great defensively structured game. I thought the Habs might try and sign him and put him in 3R (ECHL) but good luck to him with the Canes.

why the canes? So he can be a future 3rd string back up?

Sometimes I feel like the expectations for the UDFA goalies get skewed. Realistically if he carves out a career as an NHL backup, he'd be doing better than most guys coming out of college. Not sure why people act like he's going to waltz into the NHL within a year or something. Andrew Shortidge posted a .940 sv% in his final season at Quinnipiac. He signed with San Jose and split the following three seasons between the AHL/ECHL. I recall one overzealous Sharks fan who assured us that Shortridge would bypass the minors and be an NHL backup immediately.

Quinnipiac also had a highly touted UDFA goalie named Eric Hartzell a decade ago and he mostly ended up in the ECHL. That article jumped the gun and started wondering how quickly he could become Marc-Andre Fleury's backup.

Carolina has an AHL spot open so they probably made him some assurances that it could be his spot. Arguably there's fewer guys in his way in Carolina's org compared to most other teams.

Most teams already have four goalies lined up and/or have a similarly aged guy with decent upside. And then there'll be the usual shuffle of retreads as teams tend to like their #3 goalies to be seasoned vets as insurance.

Ball park goalie depth chart for next season. I'm probably missing a few guys who are on AHL deals so that they don't count against the 50 NHL contract limit:

I think this is all of it. Perets sees a chance to play in the AHL next year instead of the ECHL with Carolina. Even if Carolina ends up splitting an AHL affiliate with someone else he doesn't have any competition currently in Carolina for an AHL spot.

Carolina needs to focus on a goalie to start or put in a tandem with Kochetkov at the NHL level, so I think this gives them an easy solution for an AHL goalie to try.

And it can't go worse than their last NCAA UFA goalie.

Carolina drafted Freddie Andersen in the 7th round back in 2010. Andersen refused to sign and re-entered the draft because his brilliant agent Rich Winter convinced him there would be no opportunity for a job in Carolina.

By 2013, the Canes were rolling a trio of Cam Ward, Dan Ellis, Justin Peters with a combined .902. Andersen ended up in Anaheim, who had him slotted 4th behind Jonas Hiller, John Gibson and Viktor Fasth. Gibson is still Anaheim's starter a decade later, and Hiller likely remains there long-term if not for his career altering vertigo issue. Andersen was that close to being shut out of an NHL job for the long haul.

Life comes at you fast when it comes to goalies. Trying to pick an organization based on opportunities 3-4 years down the road is a dangerous game.

Most people look at Carolina, and say their achilles heel is shaky goaltending. If Perets had an honest agent he would tell them that Carolina is a good spot to progress his career.
It's not rocket science - Carolina is a contender than needs better goaltending. Very few of the other "contenders" have this problem right now.
