Proactive move. Kid could be special.

Canes are going to look like Team Russia in a few years. They have a future top pairing blueliner baking to perfection in the KHL right now in Nikishin as well. He will be a monster by the time he sets foot in the NHL.

This franchise looks set to be near the top of the league for a long time.

I love/hate how Carolina is basically what us analytically-inclined Toronto fans were going to get when we signed up for the Kyle Dubas era.

I think what helps Carolina's case is that there's way more collaboration at the top of the hierarchy than there probably is in Toronto. People like to look at Tulsky's mostly unrelated-to-sports chemistry degrees and see him as some sort of genius behind the scenes, but in reality there's a whole bunch of smart people there, including Waddell, Brind'Amour, and Yorke (the head of scouting), that look for different things and act like checks and balances to each other.

Wow, that might have been a poor choice by his agent.

It depends on how you look at it. The likely outcome, as with almost all young goalies not drafted in the 1st round, is that Pyotr will be a 1B/backup in the NHL, in which case, $2M a season is totally fair. There's a possibility that he's way more than that, but remember what the odds are of that happening. The Logan Thompson case is RARE.

Holy balls, at only 2M there's basically no downside to this for the Canes, worst case is you have a young 1B-type backup for 4 years for maybe half a mil over market price for an older one like Halak gets currently on the open market on 1-2 year deals. Best case if he keeps developing as he has we just signed a guy that can be one of the top 10 goalies in the league at 2M per long-term

seems a bit too long and too cheap.
I agree based on his potential, but maybe he just values the security while not having a huge sample size. $8M is a lot of money for a guy who a little bit over a year ago hadn't even been able to hold a consistent KHL gig. Great for the team and if Koochie just values the security and commitment it's not necessarily bad for him, he just didn't want to bet on himself.

This is not a same thing as with some other contracts to players with practically zero games in the NHL
because prior to his NA career, he had played about 100 pro games in Russia, VHL and KHL.

He made his pro debut at 17. So its his 6th season as a pro.

He has about 125 pro games under his belt already, so giving a goalie of that kind with those pro numbers contract worth 8 million dollars is actually strangely low side on the AV.

I think it compares to 200-250 games for a skater. Or maybe more for NA skater.

I love these types of contracts for young players. Is he going to be underpaid in the last two years? Maybe, but he’s 23 and should be set for life with this contract. He can sign a new contract at 27 and if he’s ready make bank. If (god forbid) something happens and he washes out or gets injured, he’s got enough to live comfortably for life.

I'm annoyed by how well Carolina is build. lol.
On the other hand, I enjoy watching them play a lot, so I'll get over it. haha.

Most of the starting goalies in the league weren't drafted in the first round.

Good term and security if he doesn't want to go back to Russia, and if he continues to improve, that would make him a UFA at 27 which would lead to a really good next contract
