Worst Case, Ontario
To :canes -
D Clayton Stoner (2 years $3.25M)
OTT '17 2nd
ANA '18 3rd

To :ducks2 -
C Jay McClement (1 year $1.2M)

Looking around the league at team's respective cap situations over the next two seasons, it would seem the Canes are the best bet for the Ducks to dump Stoner. They have a lot of space this year and don't appear to have any major raises in line for next season either.

The Ducks could use another NHL forward. Rather than paying to dump Stoner's entire contract, they take back some money in the form of a veteran 4C. The Ducks save just over $2M this season and $3.25M the next.

Would I be in the right ball park by saying McClement himself would be worth roughly a 4th or 5th rounder? Instead the Canes get a 2nd + 3rd, plus a solid veteran bottom pair D who can be exposed for expansion (I don't believe they currently have anyone who fits the criteria). From a quick glance at the Canes board it would seem McClement could be replaced with a cheaper internal option?

Thoughts?

Doubt the Canes are willing to pay over $5 million for a mid 2nd (budget team). Price would be higher for them to spend that kind of cash. More in the Teravainen/Crouse value range.

Would make more sense if Stoner was RHD, they already have the left side on lock. Maybe NJ would be a better fit at that price.

Well, that is about the maximum I would consider tagging along with Stoner to get rid of him. Not sure if the Canes are the right fit for it, though.

Pretty much this. We'd have to kick a solid young LHD -- one of Hanifin or Slavin -- off our roster to make space for Stoner.

The only way I can imagine the Canes considering this trade would be if Ryan Murphy gets hurt and they absolutely NEED to pick up someone for the expansion draft. In that case we would really be making the trade in order to protect Justin Faulk, in which case it would be worth the money.

Otherwise it's a no-go.

You couldn't keep them on the roster and use him as the 7D and for injury cover?

They could but it would cost them $3 million to do so. That's a lot of money to pay for a 2nd and 3rd round picks.

I think it would cost more in the Ritchie or Montour range for the Canes to shell out that kind of cash for a #7. Which I see Anaheim balking at unless they get seriously desperate. They can move Fowler for better value to clear space.

As others have said, I don't think the value is off...I just think the Canes are not the right fit with our D looking like it is.

There's a good chance that Fleury or Carrick comes to camp, plays like they belong in the NHL and still get sent to Charlotte purely because they have options and the Canes LHD situation is a log-jam.

Adding Stoner is a problem for the Canes...do you have a forward you're looking to move instead?

I could also see us being the intermediary in a trade where we acquire Stoner+ for a discount, then retain salary to flip him to a team that needs what he brings and would pay for him at $1.6M-per but can't afford him at $3.2M-per. That seems like a Francis thing to do, honestly.

That's an interesting idea.

You would think that trading for a player's contract who is on LTIR or retired for cap relief or to reach the cap floor is circumvention, but I guess that's just too obvious. lol
