If neither a PMD or a top C is availible, should they just bank that cap space in your opinion? Because if they "just" run it back they're looking at probably 8-9M in capspace (5-6M if they bring back both goalies)
I’m not sure it will be that much left over. I know Osh and Backs will be off the cap, but they’ve almost literally used all of that up already.

I’m in the “wait and see” camp, honestly. Not wrt to using the space, I’m sure that they will. Just how to use it, and how much.

IF they only sign 1G, they will prob need another. IF the sign Chychrun, then the D will be set.

Mangiapane will need replacing (or resigning), so IF they have some space left, I could easily see a vet W for 5-6m for the middle 6.

Running to fill the void with a 12m winger not named Ovechkin or Tkachuk or…..dunno who else, Kiprisov?…..just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I only felt comfortable with a winger having the largest contract on our team, all these years, because said winger was Ovechkin.

Marner is not Ovechkin…..if you catch my drift.

They're also not going to gift Leonard a spot. If Leonard signs, he will have to earn his spot in the NHL just like everyone else. If Leonard is one of their best twelve forwards (he won't be #13 or #14), then he'll be on the team next fall. And if he struggles, he will go to the AHL, play top line minutes, and be the first guy called up when there is an injury.

There's four spots available unless they bring someone in. Leonard, Cristall, Miro, Rybinski, Trineyev, will be among the group pushing for those spots along with anyone else GMCP brings into the fold.
This. Spots on the Caps must be earned by the youngsters. So yeah, that is why he would end up in Hershey. And as @qc14 noted the roster health is a lot different this year. Probably why he should have gone pro last year. :)

But in predicting the Caps roster next year, I believe Leonard is part of it. Where in the lineup he ends up depends on how he (and others) are playing. I think Dowd resigns. Not sure about Raddysh yet. I’m REALLY REALLY hoping that Trineyev will develop enough this year to have a legitimate shot at 4RW. But he too will need to earn it and that will likely dictate Raddysh.

I really like Marner but at the cap hit he will command it would really only make sense if Ovechkin was being replaced. Which isn’t going to happen.

Yeah, Marner would be a great add, no question, but the timing is about a year off. Not sure how you'd make the cap work with Ovi and without sacrificing necessary pieces. Post-Ovi, sure, we will definitely have some space to add a marquee player, but we're not sure when that will be. He might decide to stick around another year or two, and we don't know what that will cost.

In the meantime, we're been shrewd and very fortunate about rebuilding the team on the fly, and our forward prospects are maturing at a very team-friendly rate. Offense, defense, and goaltending are all shored up pretty nicely. With PLD looking good, we've got no bad contracts, and we figure to be able to keep the guys we want to keep, and we have a coach whose reputation is building around the league.

Keeping Washington a destination franchise was no easy feat in the waning years of Ovechkin, but we've managed to pull it off so far. Given the question marks surrounding Ovi's situation, I think we kinda have to be in wait-and-see mode. I really hope that he lets the team know beforehand when his last season will be. That would best allow us to make the most of his cap space.

But that time isn't now, so I think we keep doing what we've been doing. Luckily for us, the time it'll take to sort Ovi out is probably at least roughly the same amount of time we'll be getting a really good idea of what we have in Leonard and Miro, maybe also Cristall. If one or two of them pan out big, then we may be set as-is. And if all they do is make the show and shore up a very strong and cost-controlled middle six for a few years, that is something we can build around and add to as cap space permits.

Right now, with generally the same roster. Chych and LT extended, HL probably getting a QO so won't change price that much and then maybe throw an extra 700k to Dowd, they've got about 10 million in cap space with a whole 3rd line to fill out.

My guess is Milano and AA aren't back as well. Think you could move TVR pretty easily for another $3M in space. There's room for a real big addition (or a normal big addition and a small addition) if they want to make it. Especially since in 26-27 Ovi and Carlson are probably done and there's probably going to be another massive cap jump. Obviously hard to plan out when no one knows what the exact cap number is going to be as well.

This is what I've got with a $93M cap

Pretty solid….subtract the 12.5 anchor at RW, bump the other 3 up a line (or some combo), shore up the weak 6th D spot assuming Iorio isn’t ready for a full load next season.

This leaves you $ to extend CMM and Fever in season.

Carlson will get extended 1 or 2 years IMO, we’ll see. I don’t see a need to move TVR if Vinny isn’t ready for a full load (or AA).

TBH if we do that again I think he stays another year in college then goes FA

If we let that happen its a big FML
They can’t be that dumb. I think he’s going to be given a spot come the playoffs and he’ll earn his spot next camp with flying colors.

The Caps are going to give him miles of rope in the NHL. I expect he’ll show he belongs immediately and this AHL talk will be forgotten.

I would have Ovie show up in a ski mask and white van and kidnap him if it got to that point lol

I don’t know what “doing this again” means.

We have recruited Leonard to come to DC. he seems to love that Caps drafted him. Just did an interview with Walton and TEB. There is nothing at all that would indicate he would ride out college and then choose to be a FA. Not likely, but more likely than the crap about him wanting out of washington after college, is that he plays 4 years and then signs with Caps. But he won’t be in college for 4 years. I just don’t get the continued looking for Leonard to get out of Caps org.

And this isn’t pointed at you Wodka. Plenty have come and said that. I just think it is all BS. he is coming. He will have to earn his time and role. he is good enough to play NHL hockey today. And he will play (for the Caps).

Catch up thoughs...

Hard no to Marner. I don't like him from a room or compete perspective. He also blocks.

I'm very, very high on Leonard. To me potential is perennial All Star and may even HOF level shit. No worries about him coming here.

I'm high quite high on Miroshnichenko - may see some 30+ goal seasons from him plus compete and eventually leadership skill. Hopefully enthusiastic about Cristall but too soon to project his translationto pro for sure but he could shine too. Still hopeful for Hendrix. And long range Parascak, LittlePro, and now Mateiko have potential for some to significant impact.

And while I'm at it I'll update my CMM projection I made multiple times over the last year... I thought he'd e consistently be in the 20s goals/yr range with a few mid 30 goal seasons. Now going with and healthy expectation for many years in the 30s and a few up in the 40s.

We need to sit back and be patient and see how Miroshnichenko, Leonard and Cristall settle in and who gels with who (like CMM and PLD did!).

D and G are harder to predict but I'm getting more excited about Hudson.

I would definitely bring Boyd back year to year... Wish Mangiapane, Milano, and V all the best... and keep with the rolling retool from our propsect pool. And hopefully Ovi comes back with the same drive and effectiveness, and maybe is back year to year after this contract and goes for 1000. He loves winning and plays like a kid loving the game.

Krill Kiprizov may be a suitable FA target for July 2025 depending on how all this shakes out. Another option is if the F prospects come through as I expect, maybe we splurge on more top D talent to supplement an aging JC 74. If we are winning I see no issue attracting top FA with the way people love it here.

Hope y'all enjoyed this more than f'n RMNB! 😃

... strongly agree with the RMNB bashing. I grew up reading some great hockey coverage in the London Free Press with Jim Kernaghan and Jim Cressman, so I have a high bar. Tarek has impressed me out of Washington dedicated writers over the years.

This board can feel proud as I see a great deal of good insights and good discussion even when there is disagreement, weather it be on prospect potential or eye-test vs. stats-first folks. I can tell many have played.

RMNB is as most have described here recently.

Protas is a beast. Hes so big and strong and now hes fast and can snipe. Glad hes on our team
It’s funny, at the warmups for the Florida game I was like, “wow, PLD is a big dude”, and then Protas comes by and seeing him in person he is just massive.

He’s taken big strides this year, not just with his skating but with his hands in general, his stick handling is better and he’s really utilizing his long reach to get to pucks.

People can rip on PLD getting 8.5 for the next three years after this all they want (I’ve been very happy with him), but over those same three years we have Strome and Protas for a combined 8.38 million a year. I’ll take that happily.

Y’all nuts thinking Leonard is going to the AHL. GMBM said he was ready 2 years ago.
You're putting way too much weight on one comment. We've seen plenty of NHL-ready college guys (Gauthier, Smith, McGroarty) struggle early in their NHL careers.

FWIW, I would bet on Leonard making the NHL next year and playing at the NHL level all year. I'm just pointing out that it would not hurt his development at all to play some games in the AHL if he struggles either in camp or early in his NHL career. It certainly hasn't hurt McMichael, Protas, or Mirosnichenko.
