My issue is that it seems like his camp is manipulating the media to force Calgary to deal him to one of the Florida teams. Tampa is his “top choice” and we all know Tampa’s prospect pool and draft picks are as bare as any other team in the league. Florida’s isn’t that great either. Plus, he wanted out of Calgary and told them he wouldn’t sign an extension last summer. I think he’s a fine player, just not one I’d throw a boat load of assets to acquire then sign to a huge payday
I've only heard a cpl quotes so I really don't know how bad it is

but I really wouldn't be up-in-arms if Caps do go after a player and overpay a bit (as long as it's 1 of the big 2 needs, a Top-4 solid D or a scoring FWD);

we're very close to the point where we're going to have plenty of cap space to bring in a big FA/trade piece and with WSH trending down it could be a smart move to show that they intend on rebounding quick and oppty for a new piece to be an essential part of the New Core going forward might be very enticing for them and potentially a cpl others to come here for great opptys

My absolute “Ideal” TDL has the Caps somehow managing to land Hanifan and Mittelstadt.

I’d wager Dowd, Jensen/TVR, Mantha, etc plus some picks and perhaps prospects would have to go to achieve that.

But that would be my ideal TDL. Another anchor D-man, and a young C that could emerge into a true top 6 stalwart.
This is exactly what I want. But i think Hanifin is going to be a rental at TDL. That is not us. So that may have to wait until offseason/draft. Same with Zegras. Seems like we might be interested in him, but not sure it will happen at TDL. Mittelstadt is my top target. Top 6 center for sure and young. Assist machine.

I think if any of these are to get done at TDL, we will need to have some three way trades. Mantha and Dowd don’t do anything for teams we want to pluck assets from so need a contender in mix.

Necas/Zegras and Byram/Chychrun are my preferred targets, with the former C and D the prime candidates.

Avs need a 2C and some one to somewhat replace Byram.

Carolina should value future assets and cheap depth for this run (and possibly replacements for all their UFA’s in need of new contracts.

Strome + Fever, 2nd for Byram, Johansen (1 more year at 4M), 1st

Jensen, Lindgren, Milano, Alexeyev, Avs 1st, Caps 1st (or rather someone else’s added in another trade for a package of Dowd/Mantha/Patch/Edmundson) for Necas, Raanta (Pending UFA), DeAngelo (pending UFA).

Edit: I wouldn’t do one trade without the other one.
No offense bud, but I wouldn’t any of this. Yuck.

I don’t think Necas is any better than Strome. Yet we hit the team AND send 2 firsts for him?

But why? I like Byram, but I can’t see how losing Strome, Fever, Jensen, Lindgren, Milano, Alexeyev, multiple 1sts etc etc for basically Necas and Byram makes this team better.

You are — for the most part — trading away ALL of the Caps “tradable” assets for 2 dudes. And then leaving like 4-5 open slots to fill.

This would also gut the shit outta Hershey.

I know you do your best to our our trade options and ideas, and for that I applaud you.

But this one (two)? Total full Barf Bucket material.

My guess is that whatever team is acquiring Hanifin wants to extend him but he’s not showing his cards. Probably a player that wants to hit free agency. Nothing wrong with that.

So now Calgary has to whine that Hanifin is holding them hostage but he’s not. They can trade him to whoever, they just may get a lower return. That’s their gripe

Dowd & Edmundson out, Chychrun in is about all I can see that makes sense as far as restructuring on the fly in-season. If they have interest in Hanifin they should still have interest in Chychrun. Mittelstadt or Zegras seem more like off-season moves. Chychrun could be as well but OTT may have urgency due to restructure their cap.

Trying to seriously compete down the stretch, even to the point of losing Mantha and others for nothing, is likely the right call. Just the potential gains from their younger players and additional experience for the coaching staff could pay dividends down the line. But it will nonetheless suck should they finish squarely in the mid-range and likely miss out on the draft's top group. The surest way to net foundational talent is through the draft and they may stand to miss out to a degree. They could perhaps move up, move up by taking on a contract or something, but (again) in a thin draft who knows how feasible that'll be.

Cap space is their biggest asset but it's still unclear how much they'll have to work with. And it makes sense to keep standards very high and be patient strategizing how best to use it. Beyond a general desire to get younger they need plus athletes, plus competitiveness and sense. Getting younger carries with it value and upside but they also need particular skill sets within that. While I'd take a flier on a guy like Kaliyev I'm not sure he's got all of the attributes they need to be more than a project. Taking on such projects are likely better suited for the off-season vs. a stretch run where they probably can't afford tons of patience.

Strome + Fever aren't going anywhere. The second trade maybe, but i doubt Carolina does that.

Non taken, thanks for being constructive.
I just think those pieces align better age wise with the “next wave” post Ovechkin.
Fever is solid and Strome is outperforming his contract, but he’s in his prime right now and will probably only have a year or two left on his contract when Caps are in serious contention again. He’ll also be ~30 by then. Byram is also younger than Fever and already better.
IMO Byram has 1D upside and Necas has 1C upside, which is something Caps don’t have right now. Can they afford to wait and hope to find that through the draft?

Is losing Jensen, Lindgren, Milano a reason for not adding top line talents? GMBM is a good bargain hunter in Free agency, they’ll be replaced if necessary.

Well three days off before Pittsburg so gotta focus on the trade front. And again, it doesn’t really matter what we do on Thursday against Pitt. The timing just allows us to go ahead and get deals done. Hopefully have our team (plus and minus players) for Pitt.

PIT is getting their asses handed to them by EDM 6-0 so far in the 3rd
PIT has CBJ Tues then WSH Thu, so maybe we can be the 'final' nail in the coffin with a W over them Thu as their Playoff hopes get dimmer and dimmer :ghost2:

Am I missing something? Doesn’t Necas play RW primarily? That’s what he played in the AHL in Charlotte

You aren't. Necas isn't a center, and hasn't been one in the last 5 years.

He was drafted as a C and was probably put at RW at first to get the hang of the NHL rigors. Carolina has also had good to great center depth with Aho, Trocheck and Staal (also Stepan, Domi for stints and more recently Kotkaniemi) pretty much since he entered the league.
Keeping him on the right side was probably more effective because of him being a right shot in a team, like every other, dominated by left shooting players.

Draft position means very, very little. Martin Necas is also even as a winger a sheltered player that struggles in his own end.

Do you have an example of a player that was drafted as a center but didn't play a single game there that became a good center at the age of 26+? I can't think of one.

All that being said, Martin Necas would be one of my top buy-low candidates in the summer if the Hurricanes don't way to pay what the arbitrator gives him. We need offensive talent on the wings, too.

15. Washington Capitals: They pulled off a stunning rally against Philadelphia, then suffered as bad a loss as they have all season against Arizona. Brian MacLellan met with the media on Saturday and read from the Pittsburgh playbook: “We’re looking for opportunities to find more young players.” Heard they checked in with Calgary on Hanifin, but not sure how likely that is. No one knows Anthony Mantha better than Ken Holland. The Capitals also have a new talent ready in goal: Clay Stevenson at AHL powerhouse Hershey. That’s a surplus area for them, and will be interesting to see what they do with it.

The big news on the weekend was waiving Evgeny Kuznetsov, as he was cleared to practice upon returning from the Player Assistance Program. While he and the organization discussed a fresh start earlier this season, it’s hard to see how that can be accomplished without a buyout. The other option is Kuznetsov going the Filip Zadina route, depending on what another team may be willing to pay him. But that seems a long shot.

Caps talk at 1:26:00 on the 32 Thoughts trade deadline preview podcast. Reiterates Jensen's name as someone that's drawn interest. Beck Malenstyn also surprisingly mentioned, though again maybe that's more external interest than internal desire to move him. Also said the Caps have been digging into players that may become available in the off-season and that they want to change up the mix (duh).

Re: Hanifin I think the interesting thing with TBL's interest is who they'll (eventually) move to structure him into their cap? Stamkos will be gone but who's next? Cirelli or Cernak? Cernak would be my wager.
