I know most of the Capitals fan base will not agree with this but personally I believe the Caps should make drastic changes in the off season.
Players who will be available in my scenario are.
Backstrom 9.2 mil per season to 25'-26' (missed half the season) ((6 goals, 21 a in 37 games))
Carlson 8 mil per season to 26-27' ( 13g, 46a in 66 games)
Oshie 5.75 mil per season to 25-26' (8g, 13a in 32 games) (Injury prone)
Lars Eller 3.5 mil per season to 23-24' 9g, 14a in 60 games
Dimitri Orlov 5.1 mil per season to 23-24' 10g 19a in 66 games (never has been utilized properly by Caps management)
Either Samsonov or Vanecek both RFA's (Hershey is already making preparations for one of this two to be traded)
Johansson, Schultz and Kempny should not be re-signed
No I do not care about keeping the Caps core intact to appease Ovie during his record chase. If anything Ovie owes Caps fans a few more cups and he has been compensated greatly via his contracts. He also has had more than enough opportunities with this core who has only managed to cash in once.
Backstrom coming off of his injury is a gamble at this point. Common sense tells you he is going to decline and is already showing signs of decline. Anyone want to take a chance on him? You won't be getting a steal deal for him but I wonder if the Caps could even trade him if they wanted to at this point.
Carlson? anyone want to take a chance on him. If you have a stacked team he may add value but throw him on a mid tier team Carlson's fame will disappear quicker than you can say "Mike Green" or "Karl Alzner" I could see him excelling in Tampa, Florida, Toronto, Edmonton or Colorado. Outside of that I doubt he will provide the value to teams with out super stars.
Oshie great energy for the locker room, is still pretty good but skates like a princess and has been injured most of his career. A lot of it is just having a low hockey IQ, immaturity and skating like a princess and not keeping his head up on the ice. I would place more value on him than Backstrom at this point if he could stay healthy.
Lars Eller - The gas tank appears to be running low for him? Would a change of scenery help him? Any takers? He is still solid but don't expect him to stand out
Orlov - Orlov is a solid stay at home defense that some times shows he can get a bug up his but and show some good offense. A lot of times I feel like the Caps coaching systems hold him back. A mid tier team who's system would let Orlov shine to his full potential could really gain from having him. Any teams chasing the cup who would let him off his leash could really utilize his untapped potential.
Obviously the Caps would be looking for players to surround Ovie with but will entertain draft picks.
This is about as an honest opinion on Caps players that you will get from a Caps fan.
