Dubas has created a monster with our cap problems.

He needs to go for it.

He's also been mortgaging the future with nothing to show.

He's consistently overvalued and overpaid his players.
Oh wow so we found the origin of the pandemic! This dude has to go now, signing guys knowing that he would cause a global shutdown and cause the flatcap!

from the article, only because I have a feeling most of you won't actually read it thoroughly

The HRR amount that led to the record high cap of $81.5 million on 31 teams was almost $5 billion. So if the 2021-2022 numbers are very positive, the result could still be an amount that under the old formulas for determining the cap would have resulted in something less than $81.5 million. That’s why anything less than the previous revenue amounts will result in a cap increase of negligible amounts.
A salary cap of $82.5 million in 2022-2023 is the optimistic take.

And then comes the kicker. The most the cap can rise in a year is $1 million until the escrow debt, which is very large, is paid out. If the escrow debt stays above $125 million, there is a clause in the MOU that would trigger a one-year extension, with the cap frozen at 2025-2026 levels.

The reason for this is that the amount of salary paid to the players for 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 far exceeds 50% of HRR. The players are deeply in debt — that’s what escrow is, a fund to cover shortfalls on either side, and it’s deep in the red on the player side. That debt has to be paid out of the escrow that’s skimmed off of player salaries in the future. If the NHL continues to take in too little revenue to genuinely afford the salary cap they have now, that debt will rise, not fall.

In real numbers, the salary cap will look something like this:
  • 2021-2022: $81.5 million
  • 2022-2023: $82.5 million (at most, with the potential for no increase)
  • 2023-2024: $83.5 million (at most, could still be at 81.5 million)
  • 2024-2025: $84.5 million (at most, could still be at 81.5 million)
  • 2025-2026: $85.5 million (at most, could still be at 81.5 million)

scary, even scarier is that the agents in their greed never fully explain this to the player's, commissions seemingly always come first

The fact that only 5 people in this entire forum bothered to respond and read this article is sad. A buddy of mine who is a Habs fan suggested I read this. It’s scary and we are in a world of hurt if true. There is nothing to suggest it isn’t.

Yesterday I was listen to 1050AM in the morning and Landsberg is going on about how much Hyman is worth more than Nylander. The media in this city is partially to blame for the issues of players contracts and what our players should be getting. The talk that somebody was gonna offersheet AM 14 million dollars a year... it’s just stupid yet the media keeps up this click bait mentality. Hyman had 1 point this playoffs. He has 10 less points than Nylander in the same amount of games. I love Hyman and want to see him sign here but if he’s looking for 5+ million you walk away. Just over a year ago EDM resigned Kassian at 3.5 and everybody was saying it was a fair deal. This year he regresses and boom it’s another albatross of a contract. Hyman is a third line player that can play on the top line because he does the right things and he plays with two elite talents. He is not a Nylander, JT, Marner or AM.

There needs to be sweeping changes to this roster and it likely has to be at the expense of one of the big 4, you’d love for it to be JT but not likely happening unfortunately. If the right trade comes along you trade Marner IMO.

It is totally expected .. nothing new in article .. CAP likely flat for next 2 years and then 3 more years of slight increases while escrow is paid off .. da US TV deal is now equal to da Canadian TV deal so now $400M in annual revenue (200M Canada - 200M US) .. Bettman's 1B dream US TV was a complete figment of his imagination and all da crap hockey evening out teams with CAP to support regional US growth was total crap

its a mess for sure
imo the core is Matthews/Marner , you're stuck with JT so you have to retool with Reilly, Nylander, Anderson cap space

Dubas to sign.

11 AAV.

We’re about to struggle and further handcuff our team if Hyman is re-signed. Then there’s basically zero chance Rielly is re-signed. Maybe we move Muzzin to open up the cap space next off-season but that then means Sandin - Holl as a second pairing, oh boy…. This team right now is a complete disaster. It’s f***ed.

Sad.

This team is a project in failed design.
yup

last year he took money from the forwards to sign D which left just enough in the budget to sign washed up vets and trash from the scrap heap

this year he's taking money from a goalie to upgrade from completely trash forwards to just bad/mediocre

the 22-23 season plan will be for the new GM to try to salvage the team from another rebuild

There's no way you fix this mess and create a contender without trading Marner. Matthews is off the table, JT has a nmc. There's no other option. OR just stay sucking for the next 5 years and lose our top players to UFA. We had the most promising future of any team in the league and this jackass has destroyed it.

There is one way these deals can work out. If Matthews/Marner start playing like 11M dollar guys in big games, but I'm not optimistic.

I hear a lot of we can’t trade matthews but I disagree. He only has 3 years left until ufa, 2 until his nmc kicks in, if I’m gm, I trade both marner and matthews, change the culture and retool/mini rebuild. Unless your completely comfortable letting matthews walk in 3 years losing your most valued asset for nothing.

This isn't news. The players this past year and a bit have made way more than 50% and with escrow limits now there's a debt that needs to be made up. If the cap just rose as normal with both players and owners getting 50% in future years that debt would never be made up.

We've known this for a while now.

The good news is that I just noticed that the Sportsnet deal expires in like 4 years when they are projecting the cap to go up a little more. Hopefully TSN and even CBC (not under the SN broadcasters) can step in and get more games. Would love some more variety with the hockey coverage over here and not the same SN announcers for like 90% of the games.

Same here .. and after crap US deal both TSN and Sportsnet likely drop prices in half maybe even more .. Sportsnet numbers have dropped off map again once Leafs were done .. they won't continue to take a haircut on hockey next time up

I just think a lot of fans over here, especially Leafs fans are over these current SN announcers so they probably watch the games on NBC or something because NBCs ratings went up from last year for the playoffs by almost 60% I believe.

Yeah probably right .. i think all of them, except odog, hate our Leafs .. and no disrespect to these women but i can tell their insights must be from girls hockey cause in hockey it is not all about relationships .. so sick of hearing it .. feels like a soap opera

Doubt it. All it takes is 1 playoff series win and Dubas probably gets atleast 3 more years.

The fact that MLSE is just giving him a mulligan for this year indicates a terrifying precedent behind the scenes.

Put Matthews on the table as well and see what the offers are.
