I wonder what our record would be if we ended up with an average backup instead of Lankinen, who could have easily been signed elsewhere.
Likely would be a horrible start, and I wonder what we'd be saying about the team and its short term future in that alternate timeline lol.

If Quinn Hughes wasn't playing for the Canucks, Lankinen would easily be the team MVP.
You look at the situation in Colorado and Carolina, where they can't get a save from anybody. Makes you wonder if they're looking at their goaltending scouts, and wondering why they were asleep at the switch when Lankinen languished on the UFA board for more than a month this summer.....and really signed for chump change.
Although there were some hiccups at the start, at 26-game mark, Allvin wins the 'NHL off-season UFA signing trophy' by a wide margin.
Debrusk, Sherwood and Lankinen are home-run pickups. On the blueline, it's been a bit of a different story for Desharnais and Forbort, but I still think they'll be able to help as the season progresses.
And although Brannstrom didn't arrive via the UFA market, he still is looking like a genius pickup by Allvin for the price of a fourth round pick; and dumping the final year of Poolman's contract.

I'd like to keep him, but if he signs elsewhere it would still have been a UFA signing that ended up working out very well for both sides.

If you can honestly trade Demko for a steady top 4 defenseman, some picks, and a prospect you pull the trigger IMO.
Lankinen has been huge this season, and if he's willing to stay and sign a bargain contract... why not?
Don't get it twisted though Demko has played at a level Lankinen has yet to show. He is one of the true few franchise goalies in the NHL... His health however decreases his value. I really do believe with a healthy Boeser+Demko last season we win the cup...

Kevin Woodley said that Lankinen was obviously a NHL starter caliber goalie just by looking at public models.
There’s no guarantee that good backup numbers would translate when given the starter’s job and Lankinen didn’t really get much of an opportunity in Nashville. I think early on Lankinen wanted more money (he made $2M previously) and opportunity than what he was offered. Teams just weren’t willing to spend much on a backup goalie who didn’t have much history as a starter. A good example is DeSmith who got surprising term but $1M AAV to be a clear backup.
It all worked out in the end. Lankinen got his opportunity and Canucks are lucky to have him.

Trading away your proven all start starter and going all in on a guy on a hot start and hoping he sustains it is a very dangerous game to play. Could Lankinen continue his play? Yes. Could he also regress? Also very yes. It's a huge gamble. I'd rather they try and resign him in the off season and if he keeps up this level of play next year, then trade Demko.

I don't disagree but I think decisions need to be made with these two goaltenders and while related they are also kind of separate decisions. If the Canucks can sign Lankinen to a 1-2 year deal for premium backup money (somewhere between Stolarz and Broissoit's deal) that would be a good outcome. But unless Lankinen is convinced that Demko won't be able to stay healthy, will Lankinen sign here if we don't offer the most money? Probably not. If the Canucks aren't sure about Lankinen, some team is going to be more confident and sign him. Remember that we discussed the possibility of bringing DeSmith back and I'm sure we didn't offer a 3 year deal. If the Canucks are sure about Lankinen, Lankinen is likely going to want some term if he's going to sign here with no guarantee that Demko would be moved. Maybe 3-4 years at $3.5M-$4M AAV?
With Demko, it is obviously going to matter whether he finishes the season healthy. At some point we have to talk extension. I think with Demko's health struggles it's a good opportunity to talk a long term extension with Demko. The price is likely going to go up if we wait. Demko might take a lesser AAV in exchange for term if we try and extend him as soon as we can. If we make him prove it and he does it's going to take just below Hellebuyck money.

Win the Cup is a stretch vs that Panthers team with Petey being MIA and Miller and Hughes looking buggered.
But getting past EDM and maybe even Dallas (given how they looked vs EDM) isn't out of the question.
Curious - what approach would you have taken to fix the blue line this summer?

He will be leaving the team for a major pay day at the end of this season unless we decide to trade Demko and keep him.
After JT and Brock, Demmer is my fav Canuck but it’s a business and Lankinen is good for business.
I think we can get him for 4x4 which is a sweetheart deal.

He`s been hands down the best UFA-signing this season. He is the 2nd best performer on Canucks after Hughes. And this at .875M. I`d actually try to resign him now for 2x 2-3M.

Would love to extend him today for anything under 4 but you gotta think he bets on himself. Getting a great chance this year and won't sign unless he gets some serious security in the 4 plus for at least 4 years. If he finishes the year at this same level he'd be looking at 5 plus as plenty of teams need a goalie.
Lankinen is probably pricing himself out of the Vancouver market unfortunately. Teams around the league are starving for a goaltender who can give them a save right now. And Lankinen will get the money and the term he wants before next July 1st.
The only way he'd make sense in Vancouver is if Demko were to be traded.....,.and his money went to Lankinen. But that seems pretty unlikely, unless there's a team out there willing to dramatically overpay for a goalie with major health concerns.
