But Carolina would only have to offer 8.9M x 8 year to better an offer of 10M X 7 years in total dollars.

Plus Carolina has lower taxes.

I think the point is that teams act strategically to keep their own UFAs using term to beat the competition.

If the Canucks don't, they will have to trade assets to acquire a top 6, thereby weakening themselves in other positions.

Canucks better get on this train with Lindholm or the team will be appreciably worse than the team we saw in the playoffs.

All because they won't offer 8 years.
You said "supposedly Carolina will be signing Guentzel today." Is that your own speculation based on what Carolina has to offer strategically or is someone reporting that?

And Lindholm appears like he wants to go to Boston, from all reports. I wouldn't be against signing him to centre EP's line, but he has to want to stay. And I think he is a tier below Guentzel and Reinhart.

It's not gonna happen, but how would people feel about a Stamkos offer? The projection for him is 4 years at 7.8 AAV.

Stamkos, Laine, Guentzel, Reinhardt etc would all be great options. Stamkos would be clutch on the PP

(Though to be fair, if Columbus retained bigly on Laine, and we missed out on the others, I'd still take a swing.)

Emily Kaplan from ESPN reporting this morning that Carolina is both (A) pushing hard to sign Guentzel, and (B) telling other teams that they are willing to do a sign-and-trade with him so the acquiring team can offer 8-years.
Just like at the trade deadline, it seems like everyone is in on Jake Guentzel. Proven playoff performers just don't come around like this too often. I believe the door closed on a Pittsburgh reunion once he was traded. However, Carolina, where he finished the season, is still trying to work something out. The Canes are the only team able to give him an eighth year -- but also have told teams they could trade for Guentzel's rights or do a sign-and-trade to get that eighth contract year. Interest around the league is so intense, it's hard to handicap at this point where he'll land. I believe Carolina seriously upped its offer this week.
Vancouver should absolutely pay the pick-cost to do a sign and trade for that 8th year. It could be the difference between another prominent winger/defenseman or not. Western conference teams probably have a leg-up on a sign-and-trade. I doubt Carolina wants him to stay in division or conference.

Just flip Lindholm’s rights tombstone for a pick.

Use said pick to send to Carolina for Guentzel and sign him to an 8 year deal.

On an Abbotsford note…I wonder if the Canucks may have any interest in Dakota Joshua’s younger brother Jagger? Abbotsford could use some size in their lineup, Jermaine Loewen was not the answer last year.
Jagger Joshua is a wild name.

No one is trading for Lindholm’s rights. And even if they did it’d be like a 4th round pick at most which would not be enough for a sign and trade.

Could be our new Sedin Twins! Or maybe Sutter Brothers?

Besides Boston, I haven't heard Lindholm's name connected to any other team. I don't sense there is the sort of burning market to acquire his services that would justify acquiring his rights or offer an eighth year.

Doomsday scenario for Lindholm is if Stamkos goes to Boston. I guess Utah then? Or maybe Nashville?

The player they ought to trade rights for if they figure they are truly out is Zadorov.

Frank just said he still thinks the canucks are the favs for Guentzel

Nice I’m now a bit worried though hearing the contract could go north of $10M AAV, that’s nuts with Hughes coming up and Pettersson and Miller signed long term.

At this point of his career Stamkos is a power play specialist and even strength liability, propped up by playing with Kucherov and Point. He's a legacy guy in TB who serves as their heart & soul, but even they realize he's not worth the money he's going to command based on his history.

Hardest of passes, he's the kind of guy where Jim Benning would see his counting stats and give him 12 million.

Patrick Johnston’s article had some interesting phrasing. Specifically the part about a team source saying (paraphrasing) that they’re very confident re

What they're saying about the Canucks ahead of the NHL draft and free agency

This one is no surprise. We’ve known for a while now that the Canucks are keen on the former Penguin.

One team source has expressed strong confidence this gets done.

But Guentzel’s talents are widely coveted. He’s going to see a lot of offers.

Also some notes on Tanev and some external RFA's.

Guys, I've figured it out. Kevin Labanc 1 year $1 million. Arvidsson 1 year $2 million. Kubalik 1 year $1.5 million. Atkinson at 50% ($2.9 million) + 2nd round pick for NOTHING. Carolina style bargain bin hunting - who needs elite talent like Guentzel

At this point I’d be a bit surprised if Guentzel signs this close to July 1. You’d think he’d at least want to weigh the market and see his options.

My uneducated guess is that management knows Guentzel is coming here and has set aside $9.5M for him. Need to see where we’re at after he commits to sign a bottom pair D and depth forwards (please)

Let me play out an unlikely hypothetical:

Canucks have 14.49m functional cap space

Garland for Laine, Columbus retains 2.5m to make the salaries match.
Re-sign Zad - 4.5m
Sign Tanev - 4.5m OR Carrier - 3.5m
Re-sign Silovs - 1m
Heinen - 3m (same level of offense and energy as Garland but more PK utility)

Leaving roughly 1.5/2.5m left over.

Suter Miller Boeser
Hog Ep Laine
Joshua Blueger Heinen
Podz Aman PDG

Hughes Hronek
Soucy Tanev
Zad Myers
Juulsen Friedman

Demko
Silovs

Laine is a gamble, and I'd only consider this if we were out on Guentzel and Reinhart. But he is a known goalscorer, and at his best is a seemingly perfect fit with EP. But would we get him at his best? With enough retention from Columbus the risk is mitigated, and Columbus gets their hockey trade and a player who could really help them.

f*** Seravalli though.

Question, if an UFA like JG (can't consistently spell out his last name because Engrish iz 2 h@rD) intends to at least look at the open market before signing with anyone, what will he say to his original team? Will the team will push hard and continuously ask, and he'll just say I'll let you guys know after I made my decision?
