It's not about what we could have gotten out of a 2nd round pick (though there certainly is an opportunity cost attached to it). It's about could we have gotten Baertschi cheaper? The answer is probably, especially since he was refusing to re-sign in Calgary.

Seeing how the Canucks didn't have a 3rd rounder until Lack was traded after season, I don't think Baertschi could be had for a 4th rounder.

Maybe if we didn't piss away our 3rd rounder on Derek Dorsett we could have used that pick.

Also the Lack for a 3rd.... Another example of a piss poor trade.

hahaha ya right bud

Benning is the best drafting GM in the teams history so far. Thats pretty much the opposite of destroying a franchise

Eddie "Twitter" Lack wouldn't even get close to a 3rd in return this offseason after his crappy season

The craziest part that stands out to me with this regime : 7 trades WITHIN the division!

There was a time where it was just assumed trading within the division was general no-no...
Benning definitely has busted that line of concern.

Summary WITHIN the division:

Bonino, Sbisa, Vey, Baertschi, Granlund, Larsen, 1st (McCann), 3rd, 7th(Olsen) --- Kesler, Bieksa, Shinkaruk, McNally, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 5th

Didn't realize drafting was the only part of a GM's job. Why bother employing a head amateur scout then? Or is it the head amateur scout's job to sign contracts, trade players, employ a staff of pro scouts to identify pro targets? Am I confused?

It's what happens when he hires a jackass from one of those divisional teams, and ends up acquiring that lackey's favourite players.

Did we have an assistant we poached from Ana and LA as well? or Edm? or SJ?
Only team Benning hasn't traded with has been Az.

For something that's always been a no-no, its become way more common.

Holy premature statement!

Jared McCann is the best player in the history of the Canucks!

What have we lost in the process to get those young players? How was our overall performance? Can we compare how high the draft picks from Benning to those of Gillis? How many top 10 picks Gillis had in his tenure and how many top 10 picks Benning had?

If we want to compare, at least we have to be fair.

Tkachuk/Dubois are only here because of how badly Benning built this team. Though one could argue that we could have had one of those players if a smarter GM were here who went through a calculated rebuild.

Virtanen (or Ehlers/Nylander/Ritchie) would have been here no matter who our GM was.

McCann may or may not have been here; however, one would argue that we would have at least gotten the same draft pick from Anaheim if not the 10th overall pick (and/or perhaps another young player from Anaheim) via the Kesler deal.

Baertschi...who knows.

Etem could still be a bust.

Way overpaid for Vey. And Granlund is trash.

Also subtract Shinkaruk who was here before Benning got here and was just gifted to a division rival because John Weisbrod had a bad hair day.

It's almost like the NHL gives teams draft picks every year, and Benning used some of them!

Whoever came in here as GM would have inherited a #6 overall draft pick, would have picked up a high draft pick for Kesler, and would have had 2 #1 picks since. This doesn't make Benning some sort of great GM.

Also Granlund/Etem/Vey is hardly a ringing endorsement of anything. 3 guys who are basically waiver bait.

This place is a hotbed for premature statements.

Especially discussing prospect trades.

That reminds me... I wasn't on last night... did anyone lose their minds when Forsling signed?

Oh, absolutely.

But calling someone the best drafter in franchise history when not a single player he's picked has had anything other than a fringe NHL season kind of takes the cake.

Jake Milford is the best drafting GM in franchise history. 11 guys with 500+ game careers in 4 drafts. It'll take Benning a long time to top that.

No it doesn't. Freaking out on Benning for bleeding value on his assets before said assets do anything in the NHL takes the cake for sheer quantity of anger spewed.

Are you actually attempting to say that Benning hasn't generally bled value in his transactions?

Talking about NHL players is a little different than talking about 18 y/o draft picks.

Trading a 1st round pick that ends up busting and "not doing anything in the NHL" for Tom Sestito doesn't mean that it wasn't an absolutely idiotic trade to begin with.

Bad asset management is bad asset management.

Yeah.. I hated when Benning traded a 1st rounder for Sestito.

Great example.

or or.. here!
imagine if..
Benning...
Traded THREE first round picks for Sestito... and 2 busted.. but ONE played in the AHL.. whoa.. :shakehead

So hypothetically if Benning trades the Sedins to Calgary for Mark Jankowski, you wouldn't be angry? After all, Jankowski hasn't had a chance to do anything in the NHL. Maybe he's the next Wayne Gretzky like Weisbrod believes.
