Would like to see our current defense in mid-season form before I'm making any conclusions.

Its amazing how long Salo has been our #4-#5 because of his injuries, seeing him play 25 minutes a game with the bolts as their top D (+9!) kinda tells you how deep our D has been over the last decade.... if Only they can all stay healthy for one year. It also tells you how crappy the Bolts D are if they have to lean on Salo that much at his advanced age.

I remember seeing that shootout move and thinking that it couldn't have been the same guy that played for the Canucks. I must have gotten the first name mixed up or something.

Malik Jovanovski
Sopel Ohlund
Allen Salo
I thought it was a mistake to let Jovo walk but he didn't do much after he left. Ohlund's eye injury really set him back. Salo was Salo. Hard for me to say which I prefer.

Wait...you didn't? For real? I think we traded Langdon for him...maybe it was Lachance...maybe it was both. Let me check.
LOL screwed it up...we got Langdon with him for Druken and Hlavac (totally forgot about him). Not sure we ever had Lachance haha...no wait, we did. I didn't screw that up.

All I remember was he beasted +/-

Sopel and Malik had no business being that high in our system, They should've been the bottom 2 on the team IMO, I personally like the D core we have now better, especially with Edler and Hamhuis, they're gamebreakers and I don't think Jovo and Ohlund we're that, and if they were they weren't consistent gamebreakers.

Its funny how people view Jovo's time here, i thought the guy was outstanding while here. While he made alot of mistakes (bieksa like), he would contribute enough to overshadow that (also like bieksa)

He came up big in big moments.

As soon as he left, people gave him no credit for being as good as he was here.

Sopel was a joke, though he had one solid year! I think it was the year before he gained all that muscle?

There was a time when Jovanovski was one of the most coveted young defensemen in the nhl. At age 23 24 he was putting up nearly 50 points a season in the dead-puck era. He was never that good defensively but I think people assumed he would develop a defensive game as he matured. Unfortunately he never gained a defensive game and seemed to lose his scoring touch over time.

I don't know if I would go so far as dubbing them gamebreakers....
to me, Weber, Chara, Lidstrom, Pronger, Karlsson & Byf (offensively), Doughty, Pietrangelo, maybe OEL are gamebreakers.

Edler and Hamhuis are really good D men. Esp Hamhuis.

I think of that group, only Jovo was a gamebreaker. The problem was that he could break the game either way.

Edler the guy who had 49 points while playing fairly solid defensive hockey isn't a game breaker but OEL who had 32 points and nearly disappeared in the playoffs offensively might be?

If this was 3 or 4 years into the future I guess...

yeah, with OEL, I'm projecting into the future (look at his Corsi delQoC), whereas with Lidstrom and Pronger, I was looking back to the past. Edler's defense is still a WIP, he has the checking ability and the offense, but not the positional awareness of a gamebreaker. I see Pietrangelo and Doughty have that MacInnis/Bourque/Lidstrom thing where they know exactly where the play is going to go before it happens. Whereas, Edler is still chasing alot, thats the part of the game thats keeping him from being a "gamebreaker" imho.

I liked Malik. Let him go too early.

Neither were voluntary choices really, the salary cap forced our hand. Other teams had the cap space to pay more money to Jovo, Malik, and even Sopel than we could.

That's why Gillis blue line is so commendable, if contracts were inflated to the value of the former 3 then we couldn't afford this blue line either.
