The simple opportunity to get a talent like Michkov at 5th overall justify its selection even if it bust.

To get your hands on such a talent, you need to finish 32th, then you have 18% chance for the 1st overall pick. And at least 50% of the times, even the last 3 drafts, this type of talent is not even there. That is your best odds at such a talent. If you finish 30th or 31th, its even worst than that, let alone finishing 27th. So you need lottery luck in a good years. Real odds must be below 1% to get a player like him.

Its so rare of an opportunity, once in many decade actually.

So like i said, the simple opportunity to draft such a talent at 5th overall justify in itself all of the risk there is associated.
I 100% agree. I would take it one step further. If i am Hughes i poison the waters by paying the media to spread Russian conspiracy stories in a misinformation attempt to lower Michkov's draft value.

Michkov is a phenom. People here haven't grasped that concept.

We can mostly only take people’s word for it; I don’t think anyone struggles conceptualizing. If you told me he behaves as both particle and wave I’d have a harder time.

if my gf told me she somehow knows Scarlett J and I could chose a hand job from the old log tonight or a threesome… in 5 years!!! I’d take the quicky and switch on the 3rd period.

You don't think he's a phenom? What he has done in the KHL for a 17/18 year old is un-precedented. No one has come close to his PPG average - no even Ovi. He's been a phenom since he was 16 years old (like Bedard) and nothing has changed. He has just cemented that tag.

If he was in the WHL playing against kids, he would have been challenging Bedard for the scoring race.

I heard the same of Wright for 6 months. I just wish I could watch his games somehow.

It’s clear his stats are great, I’m not saying I don’t believe the hype either.

Stats are a factor. But if you watch him play, he's always a threat and a dynamic player.

Never once was Wright considered a dynamic player (after his u18 season).

It is rare to have a chance at any of the players considered top 5. If Habs had the 17th pick and Michkov was there at 5 go for it. As it is they would have to know for sure Michkov was going to stay in Canada after the draft to risk coming out of a draft this deep with NOTHING.

Well, if there’s a drop off after the top 5, then Habs should stick to the top 5.

Why would we spend a top 5 pick for someone like Timo Meier if the actual Timo Meier in his prime just got traded for a low 1st, a 2nd and B-level prospects?

We should be spending it on something that we can't trade for:

- A top-line offensive C (Smith or Carlsson)
- A top-line offensive winger (Michkov or Benson)
- A top-line D (Reinbacher)

Anyone else would be a disservice to the top 5 pick IMO.

Poorly rationalized posts are a dime a dozen.......Roy has a very good chance to be a top 6 forward in the NHL.
I bandied about Roy’s name in a scenario where an attempt could be made to land a higher pick. Maybe I underestimated his potential impact?

There is a lot of smoke that points to the Habs being skittish about Michkov dropping on their lap at their current drafting slot.

The gyst of my suggestion from earlier posts was to create an attempt to move up by constructing an offer that draws from redundancy (LHD, smallish forwards — Roy is not in this category).

Leaving Roy out of it and taking the position that we have surplus assets that can’t all be on the roster eventually, if Michkov is a no-draft for the Habs, who would you make available together with our 5th slot in trying to entice the 3rd or 4th drafting teams to bite on a swap?

Interesting

Aside from his contract, what is the risk with Michkov?
The same for most players in that Caufield mold, lack of size, strength, defensive effort.

Then add what happens if he were to re-sign in SKA, not saying he won't come over, I 100% expect him to be in the NHL, but when is anyone's guess.

On top of that there's the whole Russian thing and not wanting to show any kind of support by drafting players from there. Not saying the Habs will or won't do this, as how could any of us know.

My guess would be that the Habs don't pick him if he's there at 5.

Curious if the Leafs are coming for 6 and 12/Cooley, with a Matthews trade, how would that impact our draft.

I would guess Dvorsky and Barlow would be the targets. Would they try to trade up?

And they might come in on the PLD trade.

Position is not a consideration for an early pick. Also, there appears to be consensus that the top 5 does not include Leonard, Benson, nor Reinbacher, while several are saying there is a tier drop off after the top 5.

Curious to find out if the current top 5 maintain their ranking once Bob’s list comes out.
