I think the Jackets are going Will Smith, SanJose also I think will end up swinging for the fences with Michkov. I am starting to think more and more Carlsson will be the guy that slides. I think the perception is Smith has far more pure offensive potential and Michkov will be very mixed between teams but in reality he is far and away the second most talented player ( yes I think he is far more talented then Adam Fantilli) . But ultimately it’s just a feeling I have and I have no idea what I am talking about.

Ya well, reading the Mtl pundits over the last two days, or even since the lottery, kid MM is getting the riot act. The negative takes are a plenty. They are just attacking everything, even his attitude now. Une job de bras.
Around the Habs war room table all the scouts will pick MM ahead of x,y,z, by a lot. Someone somewhere will make the decision to forgo BPA. Montrealers like extremely skilled superstar hockey players, so there needs to be a “job de bras”.

Also Bobby Mack’s rankings have Smith three so it is safe to say a ton of scouts now have him ahead of Carlsson. The idea of a 1-2 punch of Carlsson and Suzuki is amazing. Both 200 foot players that think the game well and take pride in all facets of the game. What if our centre ice ends up in the future like.
1c- Suzuki
2c-Carlsson
3c-Dach/Beck
4c-Beck/Evans

Depending if you see Dach as a centre in the future. Regardless if the draft pans out that way our centre ice position will look better then it has in 20+ years.

If Michkov goes top 4, no problem, we get a top C prospect even if it's Smith. The problem is if Michkov is available, and we don't take him. We take him we have drafted an elite prospect and that takes some ofthe pain out of missing one of the Cs. We don't take him, then bloody hell.

So I want to avoid the possible DND Michkov issue. And would be good to get a top C prospect
I'm sincerely hoping there's no such thing as a DND Michkov issue in Hughes' mind and it's mostly media/fan concern blown out of proportion.

If there is such a thing AND we anticipate Michkov still being available at 5, I'd rather leverage it Draft Day style to extract assets from another team than pay up to move a spot for Smith. But again, that's still a scenario that needs specific variables to go a certain way for us to end up with a possible Michkov we don't want at 5. Only scenario less likely is Carlssom still being there at 5 imo.

We take Michkov. Elite talent. Done. He doesn't come over ? Damn. If he does come over, is great and we didn't take him then Hughes gets added to the list of dumb F##K GMs we've had. And we pay the price.

When GMs get away from the talent evaluation and emphasizing non talent factors like character, warrior mentality, being a gym rat, being able to cook chicken at 14, blah blah blah, I think it will often end badly. Not saying those things aren't to be considered, but don't overthink it.
That's a good post. I like the style. In think you know we had a lot of F##K GMs in our history, don't we?

I wish you're right but I'd say the odds are roughly as follows for who's left at 5:
-70/80% Smith
-15/25% Michkov
-5% Carlsson

Lots can change till draft but I wouldn't bet much on us getting Carlsson if we stay at 5.

Very true. I would say If Carlsson has a good worlds you can pretty much lock him in to the 3rd pick. It gets interesting if he only has an ok or even poor tournament though.

Michkov is a mini-tank

The idea of trading up is interesting, but only if we're picking Carlsson or Fantilli, and I don't see those picks moving.

Moving up to take Smith over Michkov is a fool's errand from my pov.

We're not lucky like Chicago who get to choose generational talent whenever they need it.

tbf we also can't tank like Chicago when it matters because we have so much Karacter.

IMO for me, if Michkov is serious about coming over to NHL after KHL contract for sure and gives those assurances to MTL, we take him, easily.

However if that's not the case... we're looking at who? Dvorsky, Leonard, Benson..... (likely Smith will be off the board)

Dvorsky could be more than a 2nd liner too, he has a really good hockey IQ at least.

McCagg love him or hate him, has Dvorsky at #3, and says he has no flaws in his game, hasn't seen a better defensive Center prospect since Patrice Bergeron..

Imagine drafting this at #5

when you can get Smith or Michkov or at worse Leonard.
McCagg knows nothing at hockey lmao

I wouldn't offer Hutson or Slaf
Well join the parade because neither will our brain trust. Given what it would cost we aren't moving up. There is absolutely no logic to it. This organization needs to make it clear there is no way we pass on Michkov if he's available at 5. We should be hyping him to the moon regardless of what we intend. A fish is more likely to take a bait that is in the water.

I think they have Carlsson ahead of Smith along with everybody else. I think the first 3 picks are virtually a lock with both of Smith and Michkov for San Jose to choose from although imo Dvorsky is also in that conversation.

The fake scouting services still referring to him as being 148 lbs has been a running joke for myself.

I don’t undestand the criterias to his list. It’s not just BPA.

I would add that no intellectually honest scout would put Dvorsky ahead of Michkov as BPA, Russian haters included.

I like Dvorsky a lot and think he may be the most underrated '23 prospect on this board but McCagg is desperate for attention and has his clown shoes on again.

Yeah and Hughes should be a master at the spin and the poker face. The desperation for a trade is because Michkov may be a DND. I mean if these 5 are apart from the rest, and we choose to go for a ceiling 2nd line player, well WTH with that ?
