That's right. In this moment here and now, not 5 years from now I believe Michkov is the right choice. And would stand in my conviction of that decision no matter the outcome. I firmly believe he would be the BPA at 5 if available, and its not even up for debate for me.

It's a draft pick, anything can happen after the choice that may blow up in my face, but at the time of the pick it would have been the right one. Atleast in my estimation.

I do not believe it will take 5 years for him to get here either, the idea of him extending his stay in the KHL makes no sense to me at all.
In principle I would agree with you. But this is not a normal draft pick and not a normal situation. Drafting Russian players committed to KHL teams has ALWAYS had an influence on their draft position. It's 10x worse when you consider the situation with the war, the situation with being unable to scout or see him play live, etc... Even his father being mysteriously murdered soon after he was allegedly looking at getting him out of his KHL contract is something to consider. As are the rumours that he actually signed/was coerced to sign an extension for another 2 years. Just rumours of course, but the people in the know need to be absolutely certain of his situation.

I know people like to downplay the war/geopolitical situation and think it's overblown. I talk to people in Ukraine every single day and work with them closely. I would say if anything the gravity of the situation in that part of the world is being greatly underestimated, and it is going to get a lot worse, over a very long period of time. Decades.

Smith is going top 4 for sure. MAYBE sharks are bluffing and they’ll take Michkov but no one knows.

Michkov 5th or Carlsson?

Sorry, but I don't believe for one second that teams know for sure who they are picking at 2, 3, 4 today. Way too much media spins. I'll believe that Fantilli goes 2. After that, 3, 4, 5 could go in any order IMO.

According to what? Media spins prior to the draft?

Smith was ranked 3rd on Bob's list, there are san jose reporters that said the sharks really like Smith, and it just makes sense for the sharks to pick Smith over Michkov considering both have elite potential, but one doesnt have the russian/contract issue.

If the Habs are indeed trying to move up, which will likely cost them some valuable assets to do so, will just mean that all of those ****ing stupid and useless loser points during the 2nd half of the season could get costly. Ya'll hear me though right tank thread crowd. :)

But Sheed.. But Sheed.. You're forgetting that it's all about that all important winning culture b'y. :sarcasm:

Personal Opinion,

I learned my lesson last year and people here are falling for it again, the Org doesn't leak, none of us thought we we're picking Slafkovsky until the day of the draft. Everything we we're told we we're meant to be told.
Didn’t we all foresee a Romanov trade and the Dach acquisition? :sarcasm:

We don’t know what we don’t know and Hughes is a leading manufacturer of stealthiness and misinformation.

And no, we’ll never learn. If we had, we wouldn’t need 268 pages in a thread mostly repeating the same stuff.

“But Bobrov has intel that others can’t get!”

“But Bobrov’s father works for Michkov’s team!”

“But Hughes confirmed X at his presser last week!”

“But Hughes confirmed Y at his presser last week!”

“Hughes is trying to move up!”

Rinse and repeat.

You could literally say the same for the other teams.

If we're taking Michkov, I'll be thrilled even if it takes 3 years. If we take Smith over Michkov or even Benson, I'll puke.

Smith feels like a Toronto Maple Leafs player.
If he becomes a Marner, can't really be disappointed

I mean, you don’t want to believe the habs likes Smith when it’s been easy to see for months, of course you don’t want to believe this rumour lol

Well, I think they like all 5 of them. The real question is do they like Smith over Carlsson and Michkov. Of course they like Smith over the next waive.

If Michkov wasn't so special, I'd tend to agree with you on the risk reward of drafting a Russian this high at this time. But he is special, and the fact that this whole ugly mess with the war is the only reason he'd be available to us in the 1st place. Makes me think we have to, because he wouldn't be there under normal circumstances.

I know it seems like a dicey proposition for us to prosper under these trying times but if we don't draft him some other team will and gain themselves a helluva a player.

From a strictly hockey point of view even with these clouds of uncertainty its the right thing to do.

He has elite potential, matched only by Bedard in this draft.

Major Breakthrough News! Hughes is talking to other GM's and working on improving our team. That would indicate to us that Smith is his target and he's also trying to trade for both Hart and Dubois. Hughes was seen on the phone with both the Flyers GM and Jets GM and he also called the Ducks and Sharks because Bob has Smith ranked 4th now.
