Very surprised Primeau did not play NCAA for another season or two. I think Lindgren should get the back-up job next year and Primeau and McNiven battle for the AHL starting job. Can Lindgren handle it? Can't see him being worse than Niemi and his NHL stats are actually very good.

Another good signing and a very positive thing for our organization.

A LOT of people can take a lot of pride in this accomplishment, from our scout who pushed for this pick to the Cayden himself, a job well done and hopefully a sign of great things to come.

Primeau was drafted out of the USHL, where he wasn't putting up good numbers. But Montreal did see something when scouting him. But more than that, a lot of teams saw his performances and turned away to focus on other prospects. But his USHL coach and goalie coach (if I'm not mistaken, he had one) were interviewed after Primeau was drafted. And they said that the Habs were one of the very few teams that did their due diligence and spoke with them, asking about Primeau. I remember because they spoke with the coaches, they were able to better understand why his numbers weren't great.

Primeau apparently signed a maximum entry-level contract, so there was nothing he could do further in his college career to earn a better contract in a year or two. And playing another year of college would carry the risk of him ending up with a lesser offer (or no offer) next year if he regresses or gets injured. Especially since he was a 7th round pick , he has hit a home run.

Curious.. What do you think factored in his decision to turn pro?

1) Habs put pressure on him and offered him a max ELC so he can start playing in the AHL now.
2) Primeau's NCAA team was not considered to be a contender next year so he wanted to turn Pro instead

Is it both or one of them? I don't know. What I do know is he is only 19 and this is below the average point of where NCAA goalies turn pro.

I guess we really like Lacouvee.

McNiven's been good since Lindgren was injured in January and he was handed the reigns. But LaCouvee has been a revelation for Laval. I would love to see them sign him to an AHL contract next season and have him in the ECHL while Primeau and McNiven split the net in Laval.

We know (because they both signed it) that both parties wanted to make this deal. I think the motivation basically comes down to both sides seizing on an opportunity as soon as it presented itself. My guess is that:
- The Habs have concluded that Primeau has sufficiently proven himself this year as the real deal so they decided to lock him up now.
- Primeau's goal is to make it as a pro goalie, and once he was able to get a max offer he took it to the bank.
A year from now one side or the other could have second thoughts. (Habs biggest fear: Primeau could decide to wait one more year and become a UFA. Primeau's biggest fear: he gets injured in college next year.)

The reasons you gave may also be true of course.

Some more detail on Laval preferring not to play Primeau. He will be here for the week and then return to Northeastern to complete his studies.

Primeau's deal contains NHL bonus clauses only valid for the 2019-20 season, as reported by Renaud Lavoie:

Lavoie suggests that this may be an indication that the org. believes Primeau is NHL-ready and would be in a position to steal Lindgren's spot as the potential back-up for Price. Of note is how the last time similar bonuses were awarded, was in 2016-17 to Lehkonen.

That's interesting. I assumed Primeau would spend 2 seasons minimum in the AHL, but the organization must be higher on him than I thought.

I would hate to see him as Price's backup next year, being 20 I would want him to play as much as possible not sit for long. But he is easily the best goalie we have outside of Price so if they were to say let's do whatever to make sure we make the playoffs then I could see him as the backup.

Let him get a pro year under his belt in the AHL next season. Doesn't make much sense for him to backup next year.

Re-access next summer.
