Dunn Makar
Morissey Pietrangello
Rielly Doughty

*Rielly is severely underrated here. He has never had a decent partner OR a competent D-man on another pairing taking pressure off of Rielly. And he still delivers EVERY TIME

if we're talking for Team Canada I'm easily taking

Toews Makar
Morrissey Dobson
Theodore Pietrangelo

as my top 6. Not sure who I'd take as my 7 though

Toews-Makar
Morrissey-Dobson
Theodore-Pietrangelo/Doughty/Ekblad
Bouchard

Options are prominently missing Sanheim as a top-25 defenseman IMO. Byram currently belongs with Power, Drysdale, Evans, Harley, Guhle, Korchinski etc. as futures.
Bouchard shouldn't come close to sniffing team Canada. They have enough offence on the blueline already to make him redundant and he's a bit of a train wreck defensively.

If it’s not 2026 Olympics, are we still talking about a best on best lineup where pairings and handedness matter or strictly 6 best D?

Ifs it’s a best on best I’d go:

Toews - Makar
Morrissey - Doughty
Theodore - Pietrangelo
Ex: Pelech, Dobson

I like Toews paired with Makar but in a vacuum he isn't top 6.

I also think Doughty is in the top 6 along with Makar, Morrissey, Theodore, Pietrangelo and Dobson.

The reality is that neither Weeger or Byram should belong on this list and if they do, team Canada is in trouble.

Weegar is 7th in the league in defenseman even strength production over the last 3.33 seasons. Better than Fox, Hamilton, Morrissey, Pietrangelo, Dobson, Bouchard, Dahlin, Theodore, Heiskanen, Rielly, Nurse and Letang. He is +87 over that period behind only Makar, Toews, and Forsling.

He also has the best possession numbers over that time of any top pairing dman not named Jaccob Slavin in the NHL. He just dragged an extremely mediocre Team Canada to a World Championship over the summer, leading the team in ice time and scoring.

I do not understand why this guy never gets any love.

IMO It's pretty clear cut:

Toews* - Makar
Morrissey - Dobson/Doughty
Theodore - Pietrangelo

Toews is only here because of his chemistry with Makar and will be on the team in some capacity, but wouldn't be opposed to see Rielly or Pelech in Toews spot.

I am one of the biggest Bouchard fans there is, but he shouldn't be close to making this team until he becomes better in his own end. Team Canada especially values defensive zone play. PK Subban won the Norris and was still buried as the 7th D in 2014.

There’s too many other bad choices ahead of him.
Sure but a lot depends on the coach we have already seen Bryan log heavy minutes deep into the playoffs and do well and he can play in all situations but of course any coach might prefer more of a specialist.

I watch him play pretty much every Avs game. He shouldn't be sniffing Canada's top 6.
It's unlikely he would be chosen as 2 Avs defenders are almost a lock for chemistry reasons.

Depends on whether we're talking the "6 best" guys or the "best 6 for an actual team". With respect to handedness, fit, etc.

If we're talking an actual tournament today, i'd probably roll with something like:

Toews-Makar
Morrissey-Pietranglo
Rielly/Theodore-Doughty

Could go either way between those two.

It's not actually as far off on "best" vs "best team" as it used to be. There's more balance with LH and RH D these days. I'd still maybe have Letang ahead of some others, Dobson offensively...but neither would really be the guy to unseat any of those other three RHD. Not the right skillsets for that. Toews really just gets elevated into the conversation for his chemistry with Makar and the more defensive-minded role he can play. Though Pelech and Pulock also enter the conversation on some level for that chemistry + role.

Kind of startled at how many votes Ekblad has here though. What's with that? He's...not good.

Same with Bouchard/Nurse/Sanheim

Canada is pretty shallow defensively

Yes, those guys probably don't belong anywhere near the conversation.

However, i really don't see Canada's defence as "shallow". The US and Sweden are really the only nations with arguably more depth. Canada has 6-10 really solid #1D or Top Pairing caliber options, with a whole tier of other respectable options behind them. Guys like Bouchard/Nurse in particular would really be a desperation play...if they somehow had to roll 20-30+ deep on their depth chart for some inexplicable reason.

surprised only 8 votes for Dunn

14G 50A 64P in 81GP
+28 115 hits 23:40 last season

4G 21A 25P in 32GP
-10 19 hits 23:40 so far this season

and its not as if Seattle have much in terms of offensive stars

I think hes on par with Theodore and Hamilton

Toew-Makar
Theodore-Doughty
Morrissey-Pietrangelo

Possible niche picks: Bouchard, Reilly, Nurse, Pelech

I'll be fascinated who gets selected in the next best on best.
