I think Russia is playing better as a team. Still they have some ways to go. Canada is just ahead in understanding and executing plans, both in quality and speed. The little details Canadian players do, Russian players do not do it as well (except Datsyuk and few) and it's going to tip the scale in Canada's favour. Winning board battles, holding the blue lines, and just overall game management skills. Russia often over pursues puck and as a result, they **** up their positional plays and get exposed. They are bit too confident in their stick handling skill that when they get pressured they want to stick handle out of the situation which results in slower execution speed. Moreover puck can be turned over which is especially bad against teams like Canada. Coaching wise, not a huge fan of his ice time management but he does make in game adjustment pretty well I think.
Offensively, everyone knows Russia is as lethal as they come. They can score from most obscure angles and they really can score from nothing plays. Price needs to be very alert all the time. Not only scoring but they know how to get behind the D or how to draw D out with stickhandling and give their snipers open space. It is necessary to put some pressure on the puck but Canada should not get caught watching the puck too much. Strong positional play is what Canada should be aiming to neutralize Russia.
Russia defence is a work in progress. I think they are going to come out very hard as a team but there is a ceiling on how much they can improve defense wise. It will be very hard for them to face Getzlaf, Thorton, Toews and Crosby for 60 minutes.
Canada has been pretty sloppy last game and also at the end of USA game. I felt a shade of Torino. Russia seems to respect team Canada's ability and will try hard not to beat themselves this time around but like in the beginning of the game against team USA, I have faith in leadership ability of team Canada.
