That is, in 161 total elite level international tournaments*, Canada and Russia/USSR/CIS have each been either winners or runners-up a total of 82 times. One of them will have reached their 83rd tonight...

[*=Olympics; World Championships (minus Olympics); World Juniors (including '74-'76); World Under-18's; and the Canada/World Cups (including '72).]

Here's the breakdown:

CANADA
54 wins, 28 runner-ups:
9 Olympic golds, 4 silvers
20 World Championship golds, 11 silvers
16 World Junior golds, 10 silvers
3 World Under-18 golds, 1 silver
6 Canada/World Cups, 2 runner-ups

RUSSIA
52 wins, 30 runner-ups:
8 Olympic golds, 2 silvers
24 World Championship golds, 10 silvers
16 World Junior golds, 12 silvers
3 World Under-18 golds, 4 silvers
1 Canada Cup, 2 runner-ups

That's a pretty damn even rivalry over the years, despite all the historical vagaries in the nature of the tourneys!

This tournament died when NA was eliminated. It's just a cash grab anyways

Surprised how close that is, though I don't know that the vast majority of those games are "elite level".

Nope.

The Soviets used "professionals". Canada was forced to use a bunch of amateurs, every day lads. I still hate the IIHF to this day for that.

Imagine our best playing during the Soviet domination of international hockey. Sure, they would have won a few, but I bet we would have won more. That era is tainted.

The totals are pretty skewered considering the nature of the world championships and olympics that took place when Canada could only throw amateurs in there for so many olys against Russias best, ditto the worlds and even when Canada starting sending pros it was still only the leftovers from those knocked out of the playoffs and who agreed to participate and even at that they were put together on the spur of the moment teams against a well oiled Soviet team that played together all the time.

You could also factor in the Canada cups being home tournaments for the Canadians also.

The best reflection of the rivalry is probably the olympics since 1998 when everything has basically been on an even footing.

Our best have won 8 of 12. We also won the 1972 Summit Series.

Canada is the greatest hockey nation. Period. We are the King.

jj I'm ready for a ****ing fight are you?

This is war, we have to destroy them. Hockey is who we are, I'm fired up for tonight. Lets Go!!!

Go Canada Go!!

It's been proven we are their superior without doubt.

Hockey is our game. We are the best, Europe has nothing on us for hockey. We love them, we fight with them when **** gets real, but don't mess with our hockey.

We'll send them back to their side of the Atlantic right quick.

Hey you will not watch canadarussia?

No offense, but the tournament doesn't hold much weight to me personally. I simply wanted to watch my favorite young players / prospects play some great hockey. We know what the older players can do, that's no mystery. Finland/USA both couldn't manage a single win in the tournament which kind of makes it a bit less interesting. I really don't care if Canada wins/loses here in an NHL pre-season tournament. So if I tune in, it's because I'm interested in seeing if the hockey is as fun to watch as Team North America or the pre-tourney USA vs Canada games were. It's not the Olympics, and my teams last representative in the tournament is Paul Maurice, the Jets head coach. Not exactly highly motivated to watch it, but I might if I'm bored. The rivalry just isn't what it used to be between Canada and Russia.

Canada never had victories like 8-1 or 6-0 though.

I'm a hockey historian. I actually love the old soviet hockey.

My favourite player is Connor McDavid, I compare Valeri Kharlamov to McDavid. They both possess the same jaw dropping speed and skill.

I respect Russia, but Canada will always be ready to fight as worthy equals. Don't take our kindness for weakness.

Lol, man, I've never considered Canada as unworthy opponent. Soviet vs Canada teams was the only hockey, I was considered a top level hockey back to my youth. I just wanna say, we had a lot of games vs Canada in the past, when we looked like the best team in the world.

Of course those times long gone. Nowadays Russia sucks...

100% ready. Respect Russia but ready to fight them at anytime.

Frothing at the mouth for it. The Germans were terrified of us Canadian lads.

We love the fight, we scream for it. We want war and blood!!

I respect Russia. I view you as our equal, I'll bow my head and shake hands with a Russian anytime. We are equals.

You treated our Canadians very well in Russia during the 2016 WHC from my sources. Respect. Canadians will always do battle with Russians if they want. We will always treat your people kindly when you come visit our country.

Canadians see Russia as our most noble adversary. Finland is catching up, but you have Paigin, Provorov, Sergachev, and Zaitsev coming up on D. By the way, let Paigin come to Edmonton. He is destined to play with Connor McDavid.
