Could the NHL redo the format for a Canada vs Worlds, winner brands the next tournament in a 7 game series?

IMO it's the best way to showcase an evenly matches top two rosters in the league. Given the NHL owns the World Cup only in house talent can play.

Tentative lineups look like a wash on paper for a 7 game series (I'm sure I've forgotten players)....

Stamkos - Crosby - Tavares
Getzlaf - McDavid - MacKinnon
Toews - Bergeron - Marchand
Benn - Seguin - Carter

Keith - Doughty
Burns - Subban
Letang - Pietrangelo

Price
Talbot
Hotlby

Hall
Monahan
Schiefele

Ekblad
Weber
Brodie
Tanev

Tarasanko - Malkin - Ovie
Eichel - Matthews - Kane
Backstrum - Kopitar - Barkov
Gaudreau - Kucherov - Laine

Karlsson - Hedman
OEL - Lindholm
McDonagh - Risto

Borborvsky
Lundvist
Quick

Vorachek
Draistial
Panarin
Patches

Byfuglein
Suter
Josi

Sorry if this topic has been posted before, IMO players would be motivated not to lose to one nation and for Don Cherry's rants alone it's be great.

Would be much more interested in seeing this retro summit series than another multi team tournament.

No. The landscape of international hockey has changed too much for the Canada Cup to be relevant.

Stick with the World Cup, World Champs, Olympics. Not like we need another tournament to be honest...

You mean the bore of a tournament Canada walks through every time?

Forsberg Kopitar Kucherov

You spelled Backstrom wrong! Also I would put him in the lineup as the second line centre and move Matthews to the wing.

The Canada Cup and the World Cup were essentially the same thing. I can see the Canada Cup being a slightly tougher sell outside of Canada, but it isn't as if the recent edition of the NHL's World Cup attained a high level of attention.

As for this idea, just holding a Canada/World Cup without the gimmick teams is perfectly fine. Canada vs World would sell in Canada, but most hockey does. I don't know how much the casual fan in other countries cares about a tournament built around seeing if Canada will lose. I'm also not confident that Canada will be so competitive with a team composed of players from the rest of the world in the next decade. In this decade it has been a realistic comparison, but Canada has been going through a dry spell and some nations have picked up their production.

I'd like to see them do a Canada vs. Rest of World type thing. Similar to the Ryder Cup in golf which has Team USA vs. Team Rest of World.

I just don't think the world team would care. Yes they'd play hard, but wouldn't kill themselves to win as they would playing for Russia, USA, Sweden etc.
