Just awful game by Russia. On the 22nd, mauled by Sweden, and thoroughly outplayed tonight. This team was supposed to have an improved defense, but they look worse than 2012 to me. Normally, they are not noted for being a physical team, but I have never seen a Russian team that passive. The Latvia game tomorrow becomes very critical if they are to qualify for the Quarter Final round. Latvia was close to the USA today right up until the last 8 minutes, when weak goaltending took them out of the game. Get some rest tonight, boys!

Russia would have to hit the vodka from now until 10 am tomorrow to lose to Latvia. Even then a few vitamin C and a Tim's double double might see them through.

Last time Canada and Russia played in an opening game was on December 26, 2010.

6-3 Canada. But we all remember what happened in the final. Russia won 5-3. Just one game here folks, good win but a lot of things have to be improved.

It's not just the score. Russia does not look like a good team.

The Russians are known to start slowly at the beginning of tournament, but play better as the tournament progresses leading to the medal round. Hope their defence improves and does not play dirty like tonight.

Pretty solid from a Canadian perspective. Barzal obviously looked good, as did Jost and Myers. I don't know why Jost seemed to see so little ice time in the second half. Hart didn't do anything to really instill confidence, and the third goal was plainly bad. Canada won this game basically on the forecheck and PP. Only real teamwide issue is making simple plays to clear the zone when they are there. Do that and multiple goals would have been eliminated.

Back to back bad games by Hart. Ingram should start tomorrow and if he does well also start against the US on Saturday.

Missed the game, how did Samsonov and Sergachev look tonight for Russia?

I thought Samsonov played pretty well. Giving up 5 means he could have been better of course, but he made some nice saves and didn't have much of a chance on the ones that went in. 3 PP goals, a breakaway goal and a broken play in the slot, it was more-so good offensive play by Canada and poor defense from those around him that was the issue.

Sergachev had the one goal on a nice shot [I thought Hart should've made the save, though]. Can't say I noticed him a ton out there; made a few plays showing how strong he is but Canada controlled the game for the most part.

I actually thought Russia played decent. No great individual skill but everything on the boards was good. I think the scheme tonight broke them a little bit. They were being a bit too cautious on the blue line in the Canada zone. But... russia is a slow starting team and this year it's hard to say who the real favorite is. Canada played a nice game!
