just a little off topic...

but I hope Hockey Canada has enough sense this year to make a Hip song Team Canada's goal song at every international tournament in honor of our friend and patriot, Gord. Being a university student in the 90s meant being a Hip fan.

Detroit 1st. rd. draft pick '16. up until this year played NCAA, now plays WHL; and like most Canadians who opt for NCAA get shunned by Hockey Canada. So, no Hockey Canada experience coming up through the various age groups.

I like him. and have him on my roster 2nd. or 3rd. pairing. I'd take him over returnee Jake Bean.
If I remember correctly Cholowski was a late bloomer, so I don't think he was shunned by Hockey Canada considering Jost and Fabrro were part of his age group, and given every opportunity to represent the team. The only realistic team he could have made was one of the U-17 challenge teams. He may have had a shot at the 2016 U-18 team, but Chilliwack was still in the BCHL players.

I can't think of a really deserving player who went the NCAA route they have shunned recently. Guys like Bowers, McBaine, Fabbro, Bowers, and Jost have all been given ample opportunity if eligible.

they make a few obvious choices of those players who have POE experience coming up through the various age groups, after that HC's default position is to the CHL.

Keep the feedback coming guys. Really appreciate everyones input. Everybody except for that troll Eye of Ra seem to know a lot about junior hockey.

before I set on for my morning run. :)

as per tradition, my weekly Saturday roster update.

How can anybody ignore Steenbergen scoring at a 3 PPG clip. woozers.

Jost, Tippet, Mete and Girard still in the NHL. I'm expecting to be returned at some point, but dumb dumb NHL GMs...who knows at this point.
The other 4 on NHL rosters I wont mention as they won't be available, mostly likely Jost won't either...

Injured are: M MCLEOD, G VILARDI, M COMTOIS and T BENSON. The only player I want at the December camp is McLeod. UThat was an ugly incident with Comtois. I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him on the team 2019.

I'm a big fan of Mascherin, but less than enthralled with his start to the season. He's fallen from 1st. line LW to in a battle with Morrison for 13th. forward.

Stelio Mattheos has the coolest name in hockey. I liked him at u17/u18 tournaments.

Most players are WHL a few OHL/NCAA players. Nobody from the Q. as it should be this year, unless Girard is made available. but I'm sure Hockey Canada sees things differently.

Why is Tyler Benson on the list of invitees to the WHL/Russia series? Has he returned from injury and playing games or is expected back shortly?

Guarantee Drake Batherson makes this team.

GPG+ and nearly 2PGG playing with a team of rookies, what he's doing in the Q right now is insane.

Perhaps it is a projection that he will return. The Q team listed Dubois and Girard, with asterisks, in the event that they return to junior.

I wouldn't go so far as to guarantee anything, but once again do we know Batherson's citizenship status? Born in USA, as far as I see has never played in an IIHF tournament.

One player I'm not seeing mentioned is Katchouk. Second round pick in 2016, good size, scoring basically a goal per game. Listed as a top penalty killer in the OHL coaches poll last season. Seems like a viable contender for a camp spot at least. I'm also not so sold on Steenbergen yet. Not penciling him in to a prominent roster position yet.

Batherson is listed on QMJHL team for the Russia series so he is eligible to play for Canada.

I like this team because hockey Canada tends to go with a lot of guys from the WHL. I think this roster might have one too many guys from the dub but its a decent lineup none the less. I don't see Vilardi making the team because he's hurt and he didn't even get an invite to the CAN/RUS series so I doubt he'll make it. I like Thomas. I think that if there is a player from London that's going to make it (Pu, Formenton, Bouchard, Thomas) its going to be Thomas. I don't see Phillips as our last forward but nothing is written in stone. I'm definitely going to be scouting Glass and Howden because I don't ever see them play. And as of right now, even though its extremely early I see Glass and Howden sitting on the outside in. Hopefully they'll pass my eye test. Howden and Glass I'll be watching carefully. I think Steenbergen makes this team. I'm comparing him to J.C Lipton who we had on our team a couple years ago. Can't wait to watch the CAN/RUS series really. That will tell me a lot.

Batherson is listed on QMJHL team for the Russia series so he is eligible to play for Canada.

Possibly, but not definitely. These games don't exactly correspond to IIHF eligibility. Hockey Canada used Cal Foote last year and he wasn't eligible to play for Canada in the WJC tournament that followed. Same with Logan Brown in 2015. Those guys were in different situations with regard to eligibility than Batherson might be. I just want to know if Batherson is a Canadian citizen. He probably is.

Doesn't matter. He's on team QMJHL when they play the Russians so they definitely want to have a look at him.

Sure they want to have a look at him. He is probably eligible, but his inclusion in that team doesn't guarantee it. There is also the Logan Brown situation where he played in this series when he wasn't eligible to play for Canada, then Hockey Canada showed little interest going forward and now he is locked into playing for USA.

" Drake Batherson was born there, and has dual American-Canadian citizenship."

Kole Lind is playing himself on to the team.

That could very well be. but so what! We don't have any smallish left-shooting playmaking centers (Sam Steel) to see if we can't recreate that kind of dynamic? It's a good experiment for the WHL/Russia games and December camp.

15*. Hat-trick including the ot winner and and assist yesterday.

What he is doing in Cape Breton is absurd. 15 goals 9 assists in 13 games.

He has 13 more points than his next closest teammate.

I'v only seen one of his games this year, he looked like a good 19 year old but nothing special. The numbers are special though. I'm going to see him play at least two games this week though, so hoping to see exactly what he's doing. I know that he isn't getting that much support from the rest of the team. Should be making a strong connection with Bowers as they both try to make the WJC team, but I guess that Bowers was too good for that.

Yeah I was about to ask "Why isn't anyone talking about Boris Katchouk?" I think 19 year old non-1st round picks are criminally underrated around here, and I'm glad Hockey Canada doesn't hold that same bias. I'm seeing far too many 18-year-olds suggested here. I'm a Red Wings fan, but like, Rasmussen? Really? The 2017 draft was regarded as one of the weaker draft classes in recent memory, so I'm really not buying in to the 18 year olds yet. Unless we're getting a Nolan Patrick, then pass on all of them except for possibly a guy like Nick Suzuki who might be playing better than any other 18 year old and 99% of 19 year olds in the CHL right now.
