Can two teams collude?

OK crazy idea East team and West team partner up. Then the worst of the 2 trades their best non build around players at full allowable retention except for the young guys you build around. Then in 5 or so years when the better team is on the decline they do the same thing with their top guys and you end up with 5 yrs of Team A on top then 5 yrs of Team B on top. Basically the team on the bottom has cap floor on ice payroll and uses the other left over cap to "retain" salary for the other team.

Please choose a better subject than "Can this be done?".

Do so quickly.

I tried to find one, but I'm having trouble parsing the paragraph.

I'd say no. What's to stop the other team from saying no 5 years down the road ?

"Can two teams collude to rip off the rest of the league"

Which the answer is absolutely not. Two teams cannot partner up on a 10 year plan to take advantage of the rest of the league. This is an absurd idea, though i'm not surprised.

I don't think GMs would even try this. Risk getting screwed in 5 years when the other team (who maybe has a new GM at that point) doesn't honour the agreement, and risk alienating every other GM in the league who refuses to deal with you anymore.

What even made you dream up this ridiculous idea?

reading over the Dion to L.A thread with Richards involved and the discussion of retention on either side.

Now I do get that this would prob be squashed immediately but I was speaking in a hypothetical. Even to a lesser extent what about non cap-non playoff teams holding salary for a buying team to give them extra cap space? to further that what would the value of cap space be?
Also not sure of how much risk would be involved of the other GM not keeping his word cuz the NHL is still a boys club.

Gary Bettman can veto any trade.

Should answer your question.

Yep David Stern of the NBA blocked a trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers, it was agreed upon by both clubs but Stern felt it would be an unfair advantage to the rest of the league.

Funny, I thought this was going to be a LAK - CBJ thread when I opened it.

One of the most underrated aspects of the Gaborik trade last year was that CBJ had to retain salary to make Gaborik fit under the Kings cap.

Frattin, 2nd, & 3rd for
Gaborik and cap space

Of course Gaborik was hurt most of last year and was unlikely to re-sign in CLB, so CBJs got as much as they could for him.

Thanks Lumbus!

wow talk about a political situation. From what I read it was blocked by Stern the owner more than Stern the comish. Because it would have sent to much salary to the Hornets and made them harder to sell.

In the MLB, John McDonald was traded for future considerations. The future considerations ended up being...John McDonald.

He wasn't the only MLB player to be traded for himself, it happened 3 other times.

do u remember any details?

it was a trade that sent $146.5 million to teh jays for all minor league prospects (reyes deal if you follow the jays at all)

obvioulsy the trade went through but I remember at the time hearing that there was potential that selig could step in and block it. That was the first time i knew that a commissioner has that type of power.

McDonald was actually traded for a player to be named later, which is an entirely different setup.

ahh. I guess Betman would veto any deal like the 1 I mentioned cuz it would be the start of teams partnering up. But the precedent is there, look at the frontloaded contracts. If there is a way to get around the cap in this CBA they will find it and IMO having teams "hold" salary seems like the easiest way.

There's a blanket rule in the CBA against this sort of thing.

26.3 Circumventions.
(a) No Club or Club Actor, directly or indirectly, may: (i) enter into any agreements, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, whether express, implied, oral or written, including without limitation, any SPC, Qualifying Offer, Offer Sheet or other transaction, or (ii) take or fail to take any action whatsoever, if either (i) or (ii) is intended to or has the effect of defeating or Circumventing the provisions of this Agreement or the intention of the parties as reflected by the provisions of this Agreement, including without limitation, provisions with respect to the financial and other reporting obligations of the Clubs and the League, Team Payroll Range, Player Compensation Cost Redistribution System, the Entry Level System and/or Free Agency.
