Are these the best officials in Europe?

...or just handpicked lucky ones by some bogus selection committee?

Hand picked fools. If they chose best only, i think only few nations would have refs in the tournament. They think they must have refs from every league or something. Active NHL refs are never in, too little KHL refs, finnish liigas best ref isnt in. Though these farce games have always been by some mambo jambo hockey wise league refs. Havent heard farce level failures from big hockey league refs outside M. Vinneborg but he might not be in this year.

Canadian refs arein always fron bush league level, so their nationality wont help much i guess. But ofc, some have probably been good.

Not the best. It seems like for IIHF it is more important to pick evenly refs from all relevant countries/leagues, instead of just picking the best ones. And it feels like bad and awful performance in previous years doesn't have much effect on being selected again.

And change year number for previous years. If they only picked the best ones they'd probably all be Canadian, Finnish, Swedish and Russian. There are only two teams on the ice at the same time though so I don't see what the problem would be.

Referees are only given the capabilities, and respect, their sport and governing body bestows on them.

Myself, I today look to rugby as the gold standard. Refs are respected on the playing field, by players and fans...talking back from players is not tolerated at all, and the on-field official is clearly regarded by all players as authoritative...support from federation and from off-field officials for decision-making and decisions is fantastic, which re-in-forces player respect for how the match is called.

Rugby is easily as brutal and passionate as hockey, but one on-field official commands respect from all 30 players.

Hockey? Crapshoot, at any time and level. Refs and linesmen are not respected, and not given any power. So hockey reaps what it sows, and merits no respect when discussing officiating consistency.
Came here partly to say this, but also to note that the officials are responding directly to instructions and feedback they get from game supervisors. If you think that they're not hearing about mistakes they've made or rules they've misapplied, then you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

I keep reading on this board about how referees are never held accountable, that they don't pay for their errors. Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. But when you read posters talking about five mistakes here or five mistakes there, it means you don't know as much about hockey as you think. A good referee, in a competitive game at this level, will make 1,000 - 1,500 decisions a game - every time there's an interaction between players, the referee is looking to see if there's something worthy of a penalty. There are 3,600 seconds in a game; those interactions are happening on average every 3-5 seconds. There's also decisions about where to go, which way to look. Those decisions are what a referee does. I guarantee you a good referee is making more than five errors in a game. Some are inconsequential and most you'll never notice.

What separates a good referee from a bad referee is the ratio between correct and incorrect decisions. Most referees at the worlds are probably above 97%. That's pretty good.

None of this excuses bad judgement calls or improper positioning leading to mistakes. But people whining about referees should know what they're talking about.

There is politics involved in how these officials are selected. And there is politics in how

Well, this ref's decision in SWE-SUI game is absolutely horrible. It's all about I've mentioned it above - good goals to cancel, bad goals to treat as good, no proper reaction on refs' mistakes. Welcome to IIHF Worlds :(
