Stamkos is a good example. If a team wanna trade for him, can they talk with him about a new contract and have him sign it the minute after he gets traded or isnt that allowed?

Only if his current team gives them permission to talk to him.

Why can't they just contact him or his agent directly ?

No one has to know about it, it helps both parties.

Because it violates the CBA. But they're welcome to try it if they feel comfortable losing their draft picks, paying millions of dollars in fines, having the illegal contract voided and various other penalties.

I could see tampa doing it. They would be much better off trading him at the deadline and let him talk to other teams about a new deal since that would most likely improve his value. Tampa will be ****ed if they sign him for 11 mill a year when the triplets, hedman etc all need new contracts in a year or two.

If TB decides to trade Stamkos they will want a fortune in return. It would then be in their interest to allow the team he is potentially going to negotiate a deal first. The difference in value between a signed Stamkos and a rental is immense.

No it doesn't necessarly do that. If Tampa wants to resign him before he hits free agency it would hurt the negotiating if another team offered 10.5 mil. If Tampa are looking to deal him now, yes it would help them. But if this is the case they will just allow other teams to talk to him/his agent. It's not like NHL GM:s are that stupid.
