CAHL - Summer Session - Who's Playing?

I was just curious to see how many posters play in the Chiller leagues. I saw there had been a thread back in '05 about playing and was curious how much Rec hockey has grown over the past 9 years.

If there are enough posters on the board playing I thought it might be interesting to discuss the league while we wait out the summer.

So, who plays? What teams? Overall impressions of the league?

Never skated a day in my life, never went to chill games. But I love the game of hockey now. Is there a legaue for 39 year olds "willing to learn" noobs (never skated a day in his life) to join? I dont mean to hi-jack your thread, because IDK what exactly your talking about. But I am bored with nothing to do, and would love to learn how to play the game I follow :) Maybe i should start a new thread...but you seem like the person to ask :handclap:

Where/How do I join up?

I play on the Hamilton Mustangs in Thurs D North (just won the session) and in the Sun D West A. Been playing for about 9 years when there was on 1 D league. On metroboards we use to do a scrimmage with all the posters, was fun for bragging rights

There's an E league now, so you can start there. Just go to the Chillers web site for details

As another poster mentioned, there is a beginners league (E league) which is filled with people just getting started. They also have an over 40 league, although a lot of those guys are quite decent, I believe there is a broad range of skills.

I only picked up playing when I was 27, and I went directly into D South, which is the lowest D league and just a step above E. I had skated maybe a dozen times in my life up to that point and had never played an organized game of any sort. While I eventually got the hang of it and worked my way up, I do regret not starting in E to build my skills and even more so my confidence.

If you're not ready to jump right into league play, they have a number of learn to play classes you can take. You might even find a team to play on through the people you meet in the classes.

If you're on the fence I say just take the plunge. You won't regret it.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'd be down to try to organize an HF pickup.

Teams I play for: Thursday D West - Bye Week, Sunday D North B - Honey Badgers, Sunday D West - Stronghearts, and I sub for a couple other teams.

Somehow my wife hasn't divorced me yet...

Those were a lot of fun!

I've played up and down all levels of D, two nights a week. I didn't pick up ice hockey (though I played some roller growing up) until freshman year of college. But I haven't play much since I moved a couple years ago. I tried played last fall, but the leagues and the ice here are definitely not as good- all the rinks are like the Ice Works rink where condensation drips off the roof, haha. The leagues here are a glorified pick up. But that does make sense as Columbus is the largest adult league in the country IIRC, and has amenities a lot of places don't.

I miss Columbus a lot and hockey is one of the big reasons I miss it.

Used to play in the 40 and over league. You brought a white and dark sweater so you could play for either team. Usually 3 lines. Top line against top line, middle against middle and bottom against bottom. Horn set on 90 second timer. When the horn sounds you leave the puck wherever it is and change lines. 2 halfs. Change benches at half. goalies stay in same end. No refs. Worked surprisingly well. Need to find a 60 and over league now.

BDubs is a solid team. Did they end up getting bumped to C or are they playing in D East?

No time like the present as far as learning to skate is concerned. I know a couple of team that have weekly practices if you're ever interested in getting out on the ice in a really laid back environment. Lots of varied skill levels at the practices. They usually do some drills for the first half of practice followed by a scrimmage. Let me know if you're interested.

I used to play C-1 and C-2 but had knee issues. I was average at best. Decided to play with friends on Sunday in D league after surgery. Play for Fox and Hounds and just started with Big Ern on Thursday D. Subbed a few games for them last session. I'd be down with a drop in style HF day. I'm with the over 40 guys...

Those leagues sound confusing!

Miss Central Ohio hockey though, especially now that I know it's probably crazy with people. There are three facilities here; a total of four rinks (one of them outdoors - winter only) ... For winter league, A, B, C, and D ... with D being the lowest. Summer league everyone plays everyone.

To put it into perspective; I believe there were less than 20 teams overall this year. So, in our league (B); there was us and four others.

Must be nice having all of that opposition!

Wow, that Summer league must be rough! Hopefully they spread the crazy good players around a bit.

Having all the competition is great.. lots of teams to play for and plenty to play against. However, the rub is that with so many teams game times can be rough. It's not unusual to have 10pm and later starts for Fall and Winter session. If the league keeps growing I feel like they need to consider adding a few more sheets in town.

What are your start times like? Do you compete with many high school teams for ice time?

I started 2 years ago. Had played pick up on the ponds when I was younger and some inline. In love with it now.

I play Sunday d north Toyota Direct and sub for The Other Guys. Also play Thursday D north for the Rink Rats. Normally have ice rented with buddies every Friday night and occasionally make it out to Saturday night

I think you probably know I play since we're linemates...

I have to get over how bad the reffing is (and it's bad.)

Start with some stick and puck sessions. Those are great at just letting you go out and do whatever you want in your hockey equipment, so great for practicing. You can get added to a list of players looking for teams, but you need the practice time because depending on the size of your team determines how much ice time you get. 12 minute periods dont allow for a ton of ice time on deep teams. We generally try and keep it at 12 or less players.

It certainly can be bad. I also would like to see them change penalties from 2 minutes to 1 1/2 maybe.....they're not 20 minute periods. I brought it up at a captains meeting and was told 'dont take penalties then' to which I wanted to respond 'get some refs that can actually call the games correctly' Having said that though, I sure as hell wouldnt want to be a ref, truly a thankless job
