Gotta love how fans react during playoffs lol.

Stars played like they were content to have a split in Colorado and it showed. Otherwise their play this series has been pretty good, and it’s been dead even between both teams.

That’s missing like the biggest point…

Heiskanen is Dallas best player and the engine of that team. The defense was already thin prior to losing him

So that has a massive impact on how that roster looks, now on top of that they lose a 1st line player and go against the top favourite in the West

I didn’t buy that they had the deepest forward group in the league, that’s Florida but you are ignoring a lot in your post

Heiskanen was the player Dallas could the least afford to lose
Why sign Rants then? Get back up on D instead.

What you're not seeing in those stats is that Dallas was barely hanging on in games that they won. During that 6 game win streak just before the 7 game losing streak to end the season, Dallas was outshot in every game, sometimes by a wide margin. Dallas has been in a tailspin since coming back from 4N. Since then, Dallas only won 2 games in which they outshot their opponents.

I think that in the first couple of weeks after Miro's injury, they were able to spread his minutes around effectively. As the weeks and months have dragged out, all that extra time has caught up with them. Guys on D playing up a pairing can do it for a short time, but this is just asking more than they're capable of at the moment.

Also, those stats include games against vastly inferior opponents. It's not possible to compare them to a playoff series against a top team that specifically gameplay against you for two weeks straight. Most offensive players see a dip in production during the playoffs for that reason.

After ending the season on a 7 game losing streak and dropping game 1 in a Heartbreakers, if you told me there would even be a game 5, let alone a tie series going into it, I would be ecstatic. I'll be there tomorrow night!
Yes, I can see that too ... but it also seemed like they were managing pretty well. I guess as an Avs fan I have less sympathy for man games lost to injury, seeing Colorado's charts compared to Dallas the past few years. Index (And even less for a team who stocks up on a pricy forward rather than finding another D. Seems like that would have been the play at the deadline if the D was so bad.)

Can someone who has watched all the matches explain why some people think Rantanen is invisible (besides not scoring) or that he isn't doing anything worthwhile?

As someone who has watched only highlights of these four matches I see a different story playing out. I see Rantanen leading Dallas in high danger scoring chances (10) in all strengths. He has second most shots on goal (12) and is tied for the first place in blocked shots as a forward (6) with Granlund.

Seems like he is actually doing quite alot but just not scoring either because of bad luck or lowered self esteem.

Yah. Every damn playoff thread is polarized opposites with each win or loss by a team it's insane.

And then when you win a series - "herp derp good luck next round against 'XXXXXXX' they're going to own you guys"

I think it makes sense that the Avs wins have been them pulling away, and the Stars wins close (both OT in fact). Colorado is the better team right now, so it makes sense that they can get better distance when playing well. However, in a close 50/50 game, I trust Oettinger more than Blackwood when it comes to making that big save.

I guess, every team in the league would have signed Rantanen in that situation. And I'm pretty sure, that they have tried to find good D. There weren't that many Ds available.
Disagree. Avs didn’t sign Rants. They signed Lindgren instead. It’s a question of priorities. You’re right about the dearth of available D men but for me that just emphasizes the priority of filling that position first for the Stars over the supposedly deepest F corp with overkill in signing Rants. I still think Rants is an elite finisher but I question whether he’s a good fit on the Stars from the moment he signed. In fairness, it would be tremendously difficult as a GM to avoid the Rants sweepstakes (look at the TML and Oilers) but that’s why they are GMs. To make that tough call. Given the assets the Stars had, wouldn’t it have made sense to attempt to trade for another quality D man? Did Jones mix a trade to the Stars?

Stars are cooked unless Heiskanen comes back pronto

I'm just going to copy and paste what I posed on the Avs board:

I'd bet my left nut they bring Heiskanen back tomorrow for game 5.

I'd bet my right nut he's not ready to come back yet but game 5 is basically a make or break game in a tied series.

After that shit kicking, Dallas and DeBoer are going to pull out every weapon and trick they have left up their sleeves. IMO this game is the series. The Avs are going to have to bring their A game because they're going to get the best version of Dallas.

I'd be surprised if we saw either Miro OR Robo tonight.......and I'd certainly hope neither player is "forced" to return before they're back to 100% anyway - even if they lose tonight anyway.

Speaking of balls, there are a couple phrases in English that I learned something interesting about recently. They're kind of what's called dead metaphors (metaphors that have lost their original meaning), although some linguists argue that they're not a thing for some reason. Anyway, here are the two I learned about:

"Balls out" - actually refers to a ball valve being open all the way.

"Balls to the wall" - refers to when planes had ball-shaped knobs on their levers and is another way of saying "full throttle" because if you pulled the lever all the way in one direction (towards the "wall" of the cockpit I guess), it would completely open the throttle of the engine.

Neither of them have to do with a certain part of male anatomy.

While I'm at it, I will also mention that the phrase "pull out all the stops" refers to pipe organs. A "stop" is a manual method of engaging a rank of pipes; pulling a stop out engages the rank of pipes, and pushing it in disengages them. Most newly-built pipe organs use some kind of electrical method of engaging pipe ranks, but older organs still exist with manual stops. Pulling out all the stops would engage every rank of pipes, which would make the sound extremely loud, but it would also sound awful on most pipe organs.
