Slaggy is going to be an underrated player in 2020. His defensive game is very good and his scoreboard won’t jump out at you. One of those players you just have to watch to understand why he’s a potential big riser.

I’m going to copy and paste what I wrote in the Tuch thread because unfortunately the same thing applies for Slaggert.

I haven’t liked his development from U17 season to U18 season. He’s just there on the ice. You don’t see much in the way of NHL tools. Not bad for the USHL, but not a very good NHL prospect, in my opinion.

What are the rumors on Slaggert signing this spring?

Will KD have to put him on the big team right away or are they good with him in Rockford with Rolston?

I'd assume they have to put him on the big team right away as a carrot to sign with CHI rather than another team.

Standard operating procedure for a non-playoff team is to sign him at the end of the season and give him 7-8-9 (whatever number) of games with the NHL team. Then you go into camp and figure it out next year. Slaggert is a 4-year college player so likely close to "ready" if he's NHL-caliber. He has a bit of leverage as he can become a UFA in August, but that being said, the Hawks have very few Forward spots filled in for next year

5 UFAs, most of whom probably aren't back and 5 RFAs, maybe 2 or 3 whom are going to be back. And in terms of prospects, there aren't a ton that you'd project to be ready for the NHL next year. Perhaps Colton Dach from the AHL, but that's probably it from Rockford. Nazar has a good shot, Moore probably goes back to college. Ludwinski, Misiak and Hayes turn Pro from Juniors.. maybe Kantserov and a few others come from Europe.. but all in all, given Slaggert's age/experience he would have an excellent shot with all of the foregoing and any new UFAs to crack the roster. And frankly, the Hawks are as easy a roster to crack as any right now.

I assume he's up with the big team right away as you suggest. I would also think he would have some suitors besides the Hawks if he holds out. Hawks have the advantage of letting him get big team time immediately, I have no reason to suspect he would decline to sign this spring, but I didn't know if there were shopping/holdout/leverage discussions.

I haven't heard many updates.

I like him in what little I've seen in games. I was really surprised to see the 12 goals so far this year.

(edited to add "decline")

He's going to sign with Chicago.

He said as much like a couple weeks ago in an interview where he said he's kept up with watching Hawks games. Has also remained in touch with Rolston.

He's from South Bend and his family is there. Don't see any reason he wouldn't sign the team geographically closest to them, especially if that team was the ones to draft him. He made it clear being able to play with his little brother this season was a big part of returning to Notre Dame; so I can't imagine him signing with a team that'll put him farther away from his family.

I feel like he will have a much better pro career than his College career. Blackhawks picked a good one , he and Kaiser in the 3rd rd .

It looks like a pro game that translates immediately from what little I've seen the last two years. That's why I was asking what was going on. I have a tough time projecting much from the NCAA to the NHL, but he looks a close to a lock as I've seen for a specific role.

Hoping he can bump out some of the depth vets right away, assuming he was going to sign an jump on the ice this spring.

Don't know what issue was for Slaggert in 2022-23 but he has bounced back this year and appears set to join Hawks soon likely getting NHL games to end out year I imagine (The usual NCAA to NHL special to finish out year)
