Searched long and hard for a thread dedicate to this player, couldn't find one (sorry if there is one, mods please merge).

I've only had a chance to watch a couple Storm games (on TV and live stream) and he is a player who really intrigued me. Noticable on the ice, slippery offensively, great frame coupled with his skating (both speed and agility), I thought for sure he'd be easily a mid 1st round pick, based on talent and toolbox alone.

My question is, where in the heck did his production go? Every time I look up a Guelph box score, it reads 0-0-0-0, what is going on?

OHL (brock) and Guelph fans care to make any comments? His numbers have regressed from the start of the year, and the production is very similar to last year.

What I saw was a 1st rounder, but the production is a concern, yet ISS still has him 14th, and he seems to be consensus 1st round player.

Any insight from regular viewers would be excellent.

Dickinson jumped off the ice at me last year after Christma as I attended a huge number of Guelph games trying to get a reading on Kosmachuk. He was in the top 3 best players on most nights I sw Guelph after Christmas. We posted an interview in the spring in which I said that I thought he had a chance at being a top 20 pick this year.

He had a mediocre Hlinka camp but was pretty solid earlier this season. I saw Guelph last week and I didn't think it was one of his better games. For me it's all about projecting his offensive upside. He is a smart player with size and good tools. One thing I noticed previous to my last viewing was he was playing much more physical.

I think he will be a first rounder, much could depend on his play for Guelph in the playoffs.

Thanks for the response Mark.

I felt he jumped out at me too, but my viewings have been extremely limited.

His tools project well, just wondering if anyone else has some input on why the production has stagnated.

This is basically a thread bump, hoping to keep this discussion on the first page so the big OHL followers can weigh in.

Cheers

6. Jason Dickinson - Guelph Storm
Tons of skill. Has the potential to develop into a truly explosive offensive player. The total package offensively, who can make things happen with his hands, acceleration, and creativity. He shows signs of developing a nastier side and will sometimes mix it up in the corners or in front of the net. That side of his game does need to continue to grow though. There are those I talk to who have concerns over his consistency and compete level. To some degree, I agree. But, at the same time, he's the type of guy who can be relatively invisible all night, until a few shifts where he takes over and helps to put the puck in the net. Putting together whole periods of offensive control is the next step.

Wonder if anything has changed in a month?

He'd be lower than 6th now on my list. I absolutely loved him last year. And at the beginning of the year. But the last, at least 3 times I've seen Guelph, he has not played well at all.

Consistency is killing him. He has all the right tools. Goal scoring instinct. Potential to play physical. Skating ability. Good puck control. But there are games where he just looks invisible. As Mark said, it's all about projecting his offensive upside...which is very high. At this point, I think he's a late first type of guy. If the physicality came through with more consistency, I'd probably feel more comfortable taking him higher...but there's a lot to like...even if he has really struggled as of late.

Like arsmaster, I too am very interested in this prospect.

Could hockey sense be an issue here? He seems like he has all the physical tools and can show flashes of his potential, but the lack of hockey sense could prevent him from being efficient in his game. Which could explain the inconsistency.

I'm curious about this player as well. For the all the good scouting reports he's had, his 12-13 numbers aren't very impressive.

And yes, I know numbers aren't everything, but one would expect better than 47p in 66gp for someone touted as having tons of skill. Can any Guelph/OHL fans shed some light?

I saw a game of his in the playoffs and while he didn't contribute much on the stats sheet, and he didn't have a big impact on the game, his overall skating seemed quite good and effortless. It didn't look like he was super aggressive, but didn't look like he was just slacking either.

Interesting prospect, seems to have the tools but the projection is a concern that makes it a little tough to gauge him.

He played very well to start the year and cooled off. Like Brock said, he has all the tools in the world (primarily a solid frame that he knows how to use and excellent speed) and generally makes a positive impact on the ice, but he struggles to be a consistent threat offensively and may not project as a scoring forward. Not a floater, just doesn't always end up generating a ton of scoring chances. I wouldn't hesitate to pick him any time after the first round though, and I could see a team that saw him on one of his good days taking him in the late first.

I would say he was still creating his fair share of chances. A few games in the 2nd half of the season he was still the best player on the ice. I also wouldn't put to much stock into his lack of points in the playoffs, the whole team just got shut down by John Gibson (AVG 41.6 shots per game, many good chances)

He also improved defensively, he was out there a lot on the PK. Offensive upside might not be quite what people thought. But he is still a very good player.

Agree but also disagree.

He could stand to shoot in better places, and use linemates better, but i think he plenty of skill to project as a scoring forward.

Hes a long term project cuz hes so frail but he throws crushing hits and has the frame.

FWIW im from guelph.

He's been quite dominant lately in the AHL. After taking some time to get acclimatized to the AHL, he's been starting to collect points with frequency.

I still envision him as the Stars' future #2 centre.

Scored another nail biter; tying the game against the Reign to send it to OT with four seconds left in the game. Loving his two way game. It helps that he's 4 points behind Mikko Rantanen for the rookie AHL lead. Not bad for Texas' premier PK'er.

Will be making his NHL debut tonight on the account of Spezza being ill.

Quick look at this year's stats show he's having a great rookie season in the AHL. Other posters had noted consistency and generating scoring chances as an issue; can anyone who has seen him play this year comment on if he's overcome the noted deficiencies in his game when he was in the OHL? Are his numbers the product of linemates or his game developing?

While I haven't been watching him play I've been keeping up with him and the other Texas prospects and by all indications he's having a breakout year. Definitely not a product of his linemates. He still needs development but he's earned this call-up.

The consistency issues were only ever an issue in his draft year. He was a constant contributor in Guelph's run to the Memorial Cup finals. And he solo carried Guelph last year when they lost virtually everybody.

Congrats to him on his debut.

After he was drafted, I admit I kept an eye on him - apparently he was thinking the Hawks were going to draft him and was surprised (pleasantly, I'm sure!) that the Stars had selected him a pick earlier.

There's a chance but it's likely he'll start in the AHL.
