Made his debut for the u20 team this weekend playing in all 3 games and scored his first goal still looks like one of the better 07s playing in finland

Led Slovakia's Hlinka effort with 6 points and yet I've seen him categorized as disappointing in the tournament overall.

He's listed top 60 (second round projection) in a couple of the early ranking publications but I'm not sure how relevant they are.

Good size and clearly has some offensive chops but production seems inconsistent. Overall U20 stats in Finland nothing special especially in the playoffs where he was 0+1 and -3 in 8 games.

Still one of the better Slovak prospects for 2025?

I’m not sure what I am missing with these rankings of him. Both Sportsnet scouts have him as late first rounders and he is seen elsewhere as a top 2 round lock right now. Yet he’s not even a PPG in Finnish junior league. Do scouts see untapped potential or something?

Let’s preface this by saying that both Sportsnet scouts are terrible and everyone else has him lower.

That said, it’s not really unusual for players with less than a point per game in Finnish U20 to get drafted high. Rasmus Kumpulainen comes to mind.

As to Chovan, his toolkit, size and play style give him super high upside. I really like him too.

He produces very well with the national team and has been arguably the best Slovak player at this U20 tournament and does not look out of place at all among Czech, Swedish and Finnish drafted players.

I haven’t seen his Finnish junior games so that’s why I am wondering. But he has an interesting tool box and can play both C and W.
