He has never learned proper offensive play and always thinks defense first. At best you are talking 4th line role player in NHL and more likely he never makes it at this point.

That's not exactly the point though. Also you are coinvineently pick the late 1st round. How about we look up the players taken after Rubtsov beyond the 7 remaining picks in the 1st.

First of all I will gve you Korshkov and Kayumov, both significantly better performers in the KHL. Both developed in Russia of course as opposed to Rubtsov two years of CHL.

And then how about Kyrou and DeBrincat? All of them were abailable when Rubtsov was taken.

Rubtsov's problem is not necessarily talent. It's his attitude.

GMs should really wait to sign first round picks until they show progress. At the time Hextall signed Rubtsov, he wasn't worth more than the compensatory 2nd round pick.

I am on purpose not including goalies in the discussion. They are a completely different story. Of course I admit the Flyers did well on scouting and selecting Hart sollving one of their biggest issues that haunted them for so long.

Yes there is almost always a better players available. What you're doing can be done to any GM ever. "Why did Sakic draft Jost, McAvoy is miles better!", "Why did Yzeman draft DeAngelo, Pastrnak is a Rocket Richard winner!"

We love to judge and rate GMs drafting and draft picks, but in the end of the day NHL drafting is mostly about luck because youre just guessing who develops the best. This is why some argue draft age should be moved to 19 or 20

He has blown what potential he has. Lacks application. He can still turn it around and become a solid but unspectacular centreman but no chance of ever cracking the NHL again.

The problem here is some NHL GMs being in love with russian prospects who rush to NA ASAP, which speaks volumes about their attitude, intelligence and ultimately possible outcome of their development. Rubtsov felt entitled to get a KHL roster spot and pressured his then KHL team ot else he would go to NA. He did not want to earn anything in the KHL, but would rather choose the easy way to play against juniors in Canada. If I am a GM and I find out pre-draft the players such views, I would stay away from him at the draft. As mentioned though the narrative still is very much alive in NA, that Russians should come to NA ASAP, that it is a "good sign" for a prospect somehow.

Morin was a Holmgren pick.

Oscar Lindblom looks like a pretty good pick. Aube-Kubel. Sanheim is still coming along. Provorov is one of the best all time Flyer drafted and developed dmen. Konecny. Farabee.

Many of Hextalls picks are still developing. Also many have been hindered by injury. Frost/Patrick/Allison/O'Brien/Ratcliffe/Wylie/Ustimenko are still works in progress.

That's a lot of names in 5 drafts. Throw in Phillipe Myers and Egor Zamula who he signed as FAs and who both look like 1st round picks

But Rubstov is looking like a lost cause.

Even Szemberg, who dislikes the KHL & Russia, says this ...



If you follow his previous statements, Szemberg also dislikes that so many young & unready Swedes moving to the NA minors & juniors instead of developing in Sweden.

Because somebody has to play in the AHL and being only 22 he doesn't take up the veteran spot there.

Rubstov came to north America and seemed to have all offensive instincts drilled out of him. He went to play in Europe over the pandemic and suffered a pretty serious wrist injury. The hope was he'd catch on a little bit over there with the free flowing style but was treated as a defensive specialist when he returned to Lehigh.

Watching him in Chicoutimi a few years back, I remember thinking that I did not see any real offensive potential. He had no major flaw but also no elite quality. So I am not surprised he became an average AHL player.
