I expect it'll be guys on teams that need the cap room NOW to not have to shed pieces before the cap starts rising again.

So, Monahan, yes, Drouin, no. Longer contracts, teams will try to eke out as long as possible to limit the length of the cap hit from the buyout.

Erik Johnson in Colorado IMO. Either buyout or LTIR candidate.
Yeah which is a shame really. If his deal was 1 year shorter we could have brought him back on a better contract. However to pay 6mill to a guy that plays bottom 6 minutes now AND have a bunch of guys to re-sign with a raise? He’s likely the odd man out.

If he doesn't improve his scoring, maybe Jason Dickinson? (The local narrative is that he's underperforming but I would personally be okay with letting him play on a shutdown line, e.g. with Horvat and Pearson, or trade him with a small sweetener since his contract isn't that bad).

Yeah.... They could potentially have enough space to make it work and keep him.

But realistically its just not a good strategy when you're trying to win a cup to be paying your bottom pairing Dman 6M in cap space.

Especially an Avs team that uses Makar/Toews over 25 minutes a night and still has guys like Girard/Byram that are capable of handling 20+ mins as well.

They buy him out this summer its a 2M hit against the cap for the next two years.... If they sign a bottom pairing Dman to say a ~1.5M contract or even grab someone for league minimum like they did Jack Johnson, and they're saving anywhere from ~2-3M in cap space to spend on rebuilding the 2nd line after Kadri and Burakovsky leave for more money.

Wouldn't it make more sense to try to trade him and retain that 2M in salary? Then it only counts against the cap for 1 more year. There might even be a team out there that would take EJ off their hands for a pick or prospect at the full hit. I think this is the likelier route with EJ with just 1 more year and still being a useful player. Arizona comes to mind, who have a similar D in Stralman with an expiring contract at almost the exact amount. They could then even retain on EJ and flip him at the deadline to a contender to pick up more assets. I think if the Avs win the Cup this year EJ would be willing to waive for the Avs, and who knows, potentially rejoin them at half price for a another Cup run

We won’t buy him out but will likely be adding an asset to move him, Zack Kassian.

Some Oil fans will say he could be traded for a late pick. He’s about 50% overpaid on his contract and we can’t be retaining. What’s the cost?

Better to ask this question after the playoffs when teams decide if they just had more toughness they could have won.

Bjork is an under 26 candidate. His cap is $1.6M. He’s owed $1.8M. He can easily just get sent to AHL or be 13/14F or thrown in as a contract in a trade.

i would be surprised to see him bought out.

Buffalo expects to be just above the cap floor in 22/23 so having $1.6M as 13F is better than under $1M player. If you bury ir in the A you still have near 0.5M on cap of thry do use a $1M player fir 13F

to get to the floor Buffalo could trade him to another team that has a $5M non top 6F and needs the cap space.

EJ has been extremely loyal to the team and doubt Sakic moves him. I could see Sakic LTIR for most of the season to rest him for a final playoff run.

I think it will depend on which team need to reach the floor or are ready to take dumps. On top of my head : ARI SEA DET BUF ANA should all be ok for the right price.

You’re not going to get a pick for Erik Johnson even at 50% retained. You might be able to move him with assets, but it’s really a question of saving assets vs. future cap space.

Should be Simmonds.
Very likely the worst player in the league currently...really want him to succeed here, but he's a non-factor

And his 900,000 salary? That’s barely 1% of the cap, they can pay him not to play.

It’s Mrazek, and that’s if they can’t get rid of him. Turn 3.8 until the end of 23-24 to 1.43 until 25-26.

Not ideal but the cap should be on the way up by then.
