Buy or Rent Streaming Movies?

More and more I find Netflix does not have the movies I want. I can usually find them on Amazon to stream, though.

Do most of you rent or buy the movies? I just stick with renting most of the time, though the full prices generally are not too bad.

Paying for a digital copy of something just feels fundamentally gross to me.

Download illegally or watch in theaters, then buy the expensive Blu Rays/Criterions of the ones I like.

Yeah, that is part of why I lean towards renting. Who knows when Amazon's business model changes or their ability to share a license for a given movie goes away.

Toronto
See movies in theatres: 75%
Rent movies: 20%
Other: 4%
Buy: 1% (just ultra faves)

Never have had Netflix (living in Toronto, not much point) nor have used Amazon, which I should look into. In addition to all the opportunities to view international films (including roughly 75 film festivals per year), Toronto still possesses a couple of superb rental shops which seem to get nearly everything that I want to see that doesn't come to a theatre in one way or another. The gigantic film library at TIFF Bell Lightbox, which is free, is another invaluable source for movies that have been shown down through the years at TIFF. Another freebie is the public library system which seems to be able to acquire anything I could possibly want to borrow (including esoteric Indian films as a for instance). Next to Paris, Toronto is probably the best city in the world to see movies.

I only really buy movies if it's a Criterion for the most part, anything else I'd want to watch is probably available on Netflix or Amazon.

Only time I can remember renting a streamed movie was when I got a voucher to rent one for free after buying a bunch of BluRays.

I stick to what I get for "free" through Netflix and HBO Nordic.

That sounds awesome!

Where I live only documentary films are free, and the selection is terrible.

Not a big fan of torrents, mainly because I find I dont watch movies twice unless its a physical copy sitting on the tv set or a movie I saw in theatres that I see on netflix. Thats changed a bit recently though.

Generally if Im goign to pirate a movie I just watch a pirate stream. Pirate streams have gotten pretty good in the last 10 years. I assume they're a relatively big money maker because they are just filled with malicious ads and redirects if you dont access them through xbmc. Who is buying all these ads?

Also I feel like torrenting is just hoarding movies that you're never going to watch again. And then theres the possibility of actually being sued, which does happen. And then I'm always paranoid about my hard drive failing on me. I just dont see the point.

Other, and keep them on hard-drives (and watch on my computer monitor) or if it is something the whole family wants to watch I burn to DVD so we can watch on the TV. I am well past the age of needing the greatest picture quality, sound and such, although I do draw the line at CAM type formats.

When it does come to paying for it, usually I'll wait until it comes on out on-demand viewing. Very, very rarely is there something released nowadays that I want to see in theatres or buy as a dvd or blu-ray.

I go to the library mostly.
I actually have done that for some of the older black and white stuff which is hard to find in watchable quality online.

Charlie Chan, Gunsmoke, twilight zone.

Yes the library is always a great resource.

Amazon's already had that problem. A few years ago the cetain books weren't licensed to Amazon and Amazon automatically deleted them from their Kindles. That's why I don't like digital movies or games. Studios are always bickering and they can pull their movies or games at any time. Plus when you "buy" something digitally you don't own it you just own a license to it which is bs

I have only ever bought things for my Kindle to read when I had a credit related to something else. Otherwise I have always had good luck finding what I want as an e-library loan.

Way to support the medium
I spend a silly amount of money on that stuff-- the maximum amount I can justify without feeling irresponsible-- usually just out of principle/interest rather than need (I don't listen to albums in CD format for instance, but I regularly buy tons of them just so that the money goes where it needs to and I end up with something physical I can hold onto), and it's re-allocated in such a way that that all of it goes towards the things that I feel deserve it most.

I don't think pirating is necessarily an immoral tool when it's used properly. I wouldn't have obsessive interest in the medium without its help. It's a modern day radio that can unfortunately very easily be abused.

I go to theaters for Movies I'm really excited to see, otherwise I prefer to wait till they come out. Between Netflix, Amazon and HBO they end up somewhere. Annoying thing about Amazon movies are almost none are formatted for 16x9 tv's.

I kinda stopped buying blurays with 4k coming out. Thing about owning a digital library is are you going to use the same source all the time. Hard drive doesn't bother me as they will likely be stored on the cloud.

Kodi box for me. I still go to the theatre for the ones I really want to see. Other than that...Kodi Box
Its a solid secondary thing to have but I'll be honest I still prefer Netflix to it

Just the functionality, the stream quality and the relatively small amount of bandwidth Netflix takes up, I'm not getting off that bandwagon for some time

I'm just messing with you - more because you seem very passionate about film. I don't do it because image quality on a good flick is very important to me.
