Saratoga (New York):
  • Attendance: 36,000+
  • Standings:
1723947806732.png
  • Handle: $34 million+
  • First-Timers: Won the first and second races today.
  • Race 1: Jonathan's Way (Joel Rosario/Phil Bauer) looked stately in winning the opener by four lengths. The trainer's hot meet continues.
  • Race 2: Concord Green (Dylan Davis/Shug McGaughey) roared from the back to win this $100,000 MSW at 13-to-1.
  • Race 9: Grayosh (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes by a neck. Brown had three entered and finished third and fourth as well. I have seen the owner's name Flanagan associated with Brown much this meet.
  • Race 10: Power Squeeze (Javier Castellano/Jorge Delgado) got a head down in time to win the Grade I $600,000 Alabama Stakes in a memorable conclusion to one of the Spa's most anticipated races. Candied (Manny Franco/Todd Pletcher) was sent off the favorite but suffered a narrow defeat.
1723946640499.png
  • Race 12: Beautiful Thief (Javier Castellano/George Weaver) gave the trainer his 1,000th lifetime win. The $1 Pick 6 returned $72,000.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 8: Subsanador (Mike Smith/Richard Mandella), a California shipper bred in Argentina, won the Grade 3 $250,000 Philip Iselin Stakes.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: More than $8.2 million was bet on the card with $1.6 million wagered into the Pick 6.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $18 million.
  • Race 8: Iscreamuscream (Hector Berrios/Phil D'Amato) won the $300,000 Grade I Del Mar Oaks. The 3-year-old Twirling Candy filly, sold three different times, has a perfect 4 4-0-0 record and is now a multiple graded stakes winner.

Emerald (Washington):
  • T-Rex Races: Looked like a fun day at the track. If those Dino races were part of the Olympic, I may have watched. Entertainment and family fun at especially at smaller race tracks should be commonplace across America.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Canceled: Due to torrential rain and associated residue, the track canceled the card following race 5. Part of the program included the $1,000,000 King's Plate which is the opening leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
  • Re-scheduled: The King's Plate will be run on Friday. The full card for that day will be reconfigured based on today's action. The track specified:
Friday’s card will also include the four stakes that were also scheduled for Saturday: the $200,000 bet365 King Edward (G2), the $150,000 Bold Venture Stakes (G3), $150,000 bet365 Soaring Free, and $150,000 Catch a Glimpse.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $19 million.
  • Chalk Erased: Favorites lost all 11 races.
  • Tyler Gaffalione has risen to second place among all riders at the meet. His 31 win total is five behind Irad Ortiz, Jr. who had a riding triple today.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Closing Day: The summer meet ended today.
  • Card: 13 races unfortunately damaged due to off-the-turf conditions. The finale had just three horses.
  • Handle: $2.1 million.
  • Races 1 and 2 and 3: The $1 double paid $74 when a 7-to-1 and a 5-to-1 won, respectively. But the third race was won by an even-money shot and the $1 double there paid $34. Good payouts.
  • Next Up: Timonium races the Maryland state fair from 8/23/2024-9/2/2024.
  • Laurel Returns: The Capitol Meet runs 9/7/2024-12/29/2024.
  • Leading Jockey: Jaime Rodriguez with 45 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Jamie Ness with 27 wins.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $14 million.
  • Antonio Fresu scored a natural hat trick starting with race 5.
  • Race 4: Tenma (Kazushi Kimura/Bob Baffert) debuted to an impressive win. The $850,000 purchase by Baoma Corporation was sent off 6-to-1 and fended off a challenger with determination. Tenma is a 2-year-old Nyquist filly.

Still awaiting Woodbine's (ON) card for Friday. Woodbine is almost always among the last tracks on Wednesdays to reveal cards for Saturdays. The revamped card on Friday should be released tonight or tomorrow I would imagine.

Mark Casse is hitting with 2-year-olds on turf at a 25% clip this year. He is 16% lifetime. He has an elaborate barn and takes horses almost throughout North America. He has won at Colonial, Ellis, Gulfstream, Keeneland and Saratoga, He has tried Woodbine's turf with babies just four times.
