"Prove it" contract. He wasn't getting a longer term deal after only 18pts. He'll be motivated, although the motor is never really a questions

Not a knock on him but I always felt he was a high end 3rd line guy.

Didn't realize he'd struggled that much last year? And while he missed 11 games, that still puts him at about a 20 point pace, which is more of a 4th liner production than a 3rd liner. Was he playing injured, didn't fit into Bylsma's system, or just struggled in general?

Maybe an actual Buffalo fan can chime in more but I had heard he wasn't happy about playing wing but they needed to because Larson was useless unless he played C.

He was jerked around the lineup all season long. Looked great when playing with Eichel (as everyone saw coming) but Bylsma would rather play Kane there for some reason. As the poster above me correctly pointed out, he filled similar role to Johan Larsson except for being more versatile so her got the short end of the stick down the stretch.

With Eichel he was on pace for 30+ even strength points. As it was Eichel led the team with 29 iirc.

He had an abnormally low SH%, which is mostly affected by chance. He was unlucky.

Also, his usage was a major factor as well, as he did fell out of favor a bit under Bylsma.

I would say that Girgensons can be an elite 4th liner or a good shutdown 3rd-liner. Real good at maintaining possession of the puck in the offensive zone, battling along the boards, grinding, being physical, backchecking, etc. But he does not have a lot of good offensive tools and his defensive positioning is average as well, so he can't be used as a PK specialist.

In other words, a career role player and the kind of a player that you would love to have on your 4th line in the play-offs.

The problem is they don't know if he's the third line center or a winger. What they should know is that when he was on the ice his teammates played better...to a degree higher than any other player on the team affected his teammates. Eichel was his most effective with Girgensons on his wing, for example. It's not all about individual points.

So he's not going to get better anymore? Reached his ceiling at 22?

Girgensons' development has been highly non-standard. Can't generalize like this.
His development has been non-standard in terms of how much 1st-line and PP playing time he got as a rookie grinder. One would assume that it would facilitate his growth as a player. That was 2-3 years ago. Now he's dropped to the 3rd line and might have to play on the 4th next season, because the forward corps are getting quite crowded in Buffalo.

And you're claiming he's going to make substantial progress as a player right now? Girgensons is going to develop offensive tools by playing a more primitive game, by playing less and along with worse linemates?

There's no basis on which to base such a bold statement. When it comes to facts, evidence and statistics, everything points to the opposite.
