I think he has vision for roster balance.

It's quite possible that he is saying to himself, "We have all this top-end young talent. This is our future, but we're not going to get there with them on the third and fourth lines. These are prospects who are do or don't type talents. We're gonna put them in those roles and surround them with talent who bring different elements to different roles."

And the truth is, he isn't wrong. The devil is in the details of getting there.

Acquiring someone like Blais isn't a bad move. Having him as the main piece for a 26 year old top 6 winger who is a RFA is questionable though.

true. I can only speculate that other GMs didn’t think he had the chops to do what he did in the short season among the rigors of an 82 game stretch plus playoffs. That coupled with his long term asking price I imagine tanked his value a little.
I would have preferred a straight up mid 1st but I’m not too heartbroken. Blais is a good add and next years draft is better then this years.
Any idea what the other offers had coming back were?

Coyotes contact told me they hope to have two more first draft choices tonight in addition to OEL trade.

Nothing further. No idea if Rangers are involved. Coyote management has been sequestered since 5:30 this morning.

Stay tuned.

GM Bill Armstrong seems very competent.

First of all, for having no reason to do it, you do a great job of PR for the Rangers at time. Maybe in life you are just a glass half full kinda guy, I like to find a silver lining in a grey cloud. I also think it’s important to call a spade a spade. We can dance around it all we want, but this isn’t a good trade.

At the least, it should have been a 1st for Buch and from a team who is going for it. So we’re talking a second half of the round team most likely. It’s concerning that Drury couldn’t even get a first.

I don’t hate Sammy Blais at all, but now I’m going to have a bad taste in my mouth for a while. I understand why a guy like him, and having a position of strength, but their is a huge lack of execution here. I mean, I really was giving Drury credit here figuring he was working on something of a significant deal.

Not to be hyperbolic, but just bending over for the things he wants and paying $3.6 a year for Barclay, and just leaving soooo much on the table to get another Cup guy on the roster who can bang, I’d say this is a fair time to be pretty concerned as a Rangers fan.

I don't think what we've acquired (Blais, Goodrow) is bad. I think what we paid is concerning.

So for me there are two categories for the recent moves.

I like the players we acquired.

I'm less enthusiastic about the terms connected with those players.

If today's deal is a first and Blais, I'm probably pretty okay with the move. But we didn't do that, so it leaves me wanting.

Blues fan coming in peace.

Just wanted make a comment about Blais and give a little scouting report. He may not be the return you guys wanted for Buch, but Blais is a solid middle 6 winger when healthy. Not the best skater, but adequate in that department. Will hit anything that moves on the forecheck. Occasionally has crossed the line with hits, but I think he has learned from past mistakes and is getting better at keeping the hits clean. Has surprisingly good hands around the net and a good shot that can beat goalies clean. He has looked good in limited showings in our top 6, particularly with ROR & Perron.

Off the ice, there's a lot to like about Blais. He worked his ass off from being a 6th round pick to making the NHL, gives 110% every shift and wears his heart on his sleeve. He is easy to root for and a great kid/locker room guy. Try not to hate him because he was in the return for Buch, Blais is a very likable guy in his own right!

Best of luck this year.

No word yet.

My first reaction to the trade:

Going to open up a box of red wine and heat up some lasagne.

"Lemieux is quite fast"
He is, I'd say the only players who were faster on the Rangers were Kreider, Chytil, Zibanejad, DeAngelo, Miller & Gauthier. Lemieux is a fast skater, now I wouldn't call him an excellent skater, he has a very ugly stride and is not extremely agile. But if you watch some highlights of him he is clearly not a slow skater by any means. Blais will be one of the top 3 slowest skaters on our team.

Thanks, enjoy buch, you will love him.

This precisely. Like the players. A little on edge about the costs, but overall staying optimistic about the direction/on-ice result. Gotta see the rest of the puzzle yet.

Out: Buchnevich, Howden, 2022 7th
In: Goodrow, Blais, 2022 2nd, 2022 4th

I’m disappointed by the return on the Buch trade, but there are three other wingers on the team with whom the hope for future success lies. It’s one thing to overpay Goodrow, but he doesn’t impede the quality of minutes played for Laf/Kakko in the way that Buch does. If we were to pay Buchnevich top-six money, it wouldn’t make sense not to play him in the top-six, especially since there is already a burden in the Kreider contract bearing weight on the middle-six.

I don’t like the outcome, but I don’t think it’s unprecedented or shocking in any way. Other franchises know what kind of cap-burden wingers will have on the Rangers in the future, and it doesn’t make sense to overpay a team selling from a point of strength.

So was Buchnevich.

Ed Jovo love fest confirmed.

Larry is all about the here and now. He wants action, he wants immediate results, he wants something to write about. His job depends on it.

You can't do that with prospects and futures and a slow cook. So he's always going to be pulling for something he can write about. He also wants access --- and that's what Sather gives him. So it's in his best interest to pump the tires on this shit as much as possible because it keeps him employed.

Larry is 70 years old. This is his end game. There is no PR job after this. There is no 2025 cup parade. He wants action so that he can follow-up to that action by either building it up or tearing it down.

I think this is the MO on certain posters too.

The way I see it. Drury paid the “buy now” price instead of the “bidding” price. Which could indicate a firm plan of action.

More moves are definitely on the radar.

I think for better or worse Drury has vision for what he wants the bottom six to be and I think he's going to make some of those Amonte for Matteau/Noonan type moves we've discussed on here.

The concern for me right now is that Drury, from most reports, has kind of taken an isolationist approach thus far. Maybe that works for him. We will see.

Oh great an approach that barely worked almost 30 years ago and gutted the team for the future. Also, that team was a Presidents' Trophy winning caliber team before the moves not a team that missed the playoffs.
