More than it'd probably be worth, based on the way management talks about him.

He should be a solid asset in the reload, but there seems to be a line of thinking where he's the next captain. Let's just ignore that he'll be 35+ when Crosby retires...ugh.

He loses all trade protection after this year. Given his history of getting hurt a minimum 5 times a year and his invisibility when he isn't stapled to Sidney Crosby's hip, it would be gross negligence not to trade him as soon as humanly possible. (He will not be traded)

I think I have as much of a chance of being traded and I haven't played hockey in 20 years.

Should he be traded? Yes. No f***ing doubt. I just feel he'll actually be dealt away from the Pens as a 38 year-old with absolutely nothing left to give for a 3rd rounder instead of getting the haul he'd demand this summer. It'll be a mistake.

He fits the age group, Penguins aren’t trading him.

Does he, though? He's 32 and turns 33 in May. Dubas may say he's ready to accelerate the rebuild, but this is a roster far away from competing again.

The Penguins should trade him. I doubt they will, though.

I'd be shocked if his body holds up that long.

Rust is just as good with Malkin, he just never gets the opportunity.

He might have value if it was 3 full years left.

Those other years....ouch.

I'm not a "we have to keep Bryan Rust" person, but how HFPens treats Rust is bizarre to me. They hate the dude for literally no reason.

Like sure, offer me a 1st and a prospect for him and he's yours. But there is a large section of Penguins fans on this site who think him simply being traded is a win for the team, and I don't understand it at all.

Since his breakout in '19-'20 (of those who've played at least 200 games), Rust is 13th among RWs in p/g. Over the last 2 years (of those who've played at least 100 games), Rust is 10th among RWs in p/g.

He's been one of the most consistently productive RWs in the league for over half a decade, and a more recent snapshot is even more flattering. This isn't someone we need to "dump".

At this point just send him to the Notre Dame Fighting Islanders with Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri. Lou likes his aged veterans.

Why would a rebuilding team consider keeping him? Just because you want to do the sane thing does not mean you hate the guy.

He’s been a good soldier. Kunitz part 2. Important to our success. His body is paying the price now for the way he plays the game and we should trade him before the bottom falls out which is sooner rather than later.

Just some dude who knows the game

His cap hit and playoff clutch gene should make him a good target in the off season by any contender.

Rust may/may not be many things - but he can adapt his play to practically any system or any line. And he PKs which coaches obsess about.
