Pittsburghish
He seems like the type of guy a bunch of GMs would covet due to “intangibles.” No trade protection after this year.

Should be gone this summer but probably won’t as to not rock the boat of the old boys club.

Look at the games played though. Look at 2022. 58pts in 60gp. It's incredibly reasonable to suggest he could have got 2 more points if he played 22 more games.
But he didn't. Projections and pace mean nothing when the season is done and you haven't hit the hypothetical number.

Ryan Poehling was on pace to score 246 goals in 2018-19, if only he had played the other 81 games required to do it.

Zero (0) 60+ point seasons.

In the off-season I felt like rust would be a good fit for jersey of buffalo. Buffalo are overflowing in prospects and showed with the McLeod trade that they will move a kid with upside for someone who is a good fit now.

But that was before they signed zucker.

I still think they would benefit longer term by moving cozens back to center, slotting a guy like rust next to him and putting kilich back in the minors to cook for a while.

You say this but then 5 teams will give out the same exact kind of contract to the same caliber of player every year in free agency.

I don't necessarily disagree, I think the Penguins would have to take a decently sized deal back, but I'm not sure why this gets said so often on here when these guys constantly get these big deals every off-season in free agency. Marchessault is better, but he's a year older than Rust and signed a 5x5.5 deal last off-season. Toffoli is about the same age and ability as Rust and he got a 4x6 deal last off-season.
I don't think he's overpaid, but with the Pens roster, they are better keeping him. As a late 1st or whatever isn't much.
