Rust made it clear he's getting his money and good on him. So what is everyone's guess on who gives him a hefty contract?

I'd say the Red Wings on a 5-6 year/7M.

Whoever signs him will probably get a good top 6 wing for 3 years before any big regret sinks in. But that's free agency!

I'll say 5.5X4 which is a shame because I want him here
He made 3.5M and made comments on being well underpaid, which was accurate.

The Pens would resign him for that offer. I'll be shocked if he's not at 6.5M minimum.

He's been terrific for the Pens and he's not far off of a PPG player over the past 3 seasons.

Why would the Wings, a team with too many wingers as it is and going through a rebuild, sign Rust a 30 year old to a 6 year contract?

I just don't see him hitting 7

that seems a little high

I hope not, I like Rust but 6 years at 7mil per would be bad.
At least it'll be a feel good Hometown Kid story though.

This will be his career contract and he's got seasons to back up getting paid. I think Detroit would enjoy him for at least the first part of the contract but ya all long term FA contracts turn sour eventually.

Cup winner and a leader to your young squad? GMs love that stuff.

Maybe Detroit shows little interest, just a thought cause of Rusts ties up there.

Detroit is in a rebuild... They might sign him in a couple years.

Rust will not decline sharply. He’s got great speed and although he plays hard as hell, he doesn’t play the kind of physically demanding game that a guy like Hornqvist plays. So he’s not getting beaten up in front of the net and he doesn’t try to throw his weight around.

I think he can maintain his current level for 4, possibly 5 years, before declining, but it will be gradual and he won’t totally fall off a cliff. His conditioning, and work ethic + commitment on & off the ice is tremendous and will ensure he stays in top shape for as long as possible. He doesn’t take shortcuts.

6 or 7 years x 6M AAV is absolutely fine.

Easy my guy, we aren't trying to pump him up for a trade.

There's also the Crosby effect. Granted he'll be good as long as he plays with a play driving Center.

For a 6x6 deal the Pens would possibly consider it. I'm fairly certain a team comes to him with either 7 years and/or 6.5M+. It only takes one desperate GM in free agency. He'll have a number of suitors so someone will give him those numbers.

Almost every single player declines around that age regardless of style. It's just where they decline from. He's scoring at around .40 goals per game the last couple years? He might go from scoring in the low 30s to high 20s? Of course what team and line mates he'll have will help/hurt as well. I doubt someone will sign him to that much to stick him on the 2nd line but not every team has Jake/Sid.

Anyways, all that to say he's probably a good fit for a team that's looking for a Cup in the next 3 years and then they'll just have to be okay with his decline for the next 4.

I’m just saying that it’s just as likely that it’s 4 years (and possibly even 5) before the decline is really evident. I don’t believe it’s 3 years and then decline. His conditioning/work ethic/skating is just too good for 3 and then a noticeable decline.

Even still, he may shift from more of a 1st/2nd line RW and top unit PP role, to a middle 6 + 2nd unit PP + PK role and play more of a defensive oriented game where he can also excel. His versatility and utility will help him remain a very valuable player when his offensive game takes a back seat.

Alright.

Considering this board thought we were gonna get caved in, this isn't bad.

We have hung with these asshats both games.

Low scoring. Ok.

Gotta win one period. Canes just did it in game one. We can do it here.

F these F'in F'er's. Let's go out there and F these F'ers in their own F'ing Barn.

LGR!

I like Rust a lot. Not more than 5 or 6m a year though. Would rather let him and Rakell walk and go after Boeser.

Guentzel-Sid-Boeser
Zucker-Malkin-Kapanen

Still a championship level top 6 (if Malkin stays healthy). Hopefully Poulin cracks the roster and Rodrigues keeps playing the way he was. Love Bleuger too. Pens still have a lot of good pieces

Handing out a multi year $7M deal to a guy who would be the 4th best winger on Detroit definitely seems like an Yzerman move.
