Delaware North, the parent company of the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins and the TD Garden, has invested in esports organization Splyce.
Financial terms of the deal were not announced.
"Delaware North is always looking at emerging markets and new opportunities and certainly one in the entertainment and sports space," TD Garden president Amy Latimer told ESPN. "One, because we feel like we already have some of the important elements that would make a sports franchise successful. We have a sales teams for sponsorships and ticket sales. We have a marketing engine, social. We have an arena to host events. It was an ideal partnership because we already have some of the basic elements."
Delaware North says it plans to use the brand power of the six-time Stanley Cup champions and their home arena to contribute to the growth of Splyce. There is also hope to use TD Garden as an esports venue in the future.
"We love the idea of having it here in Boston. We think that we can leverage an unbelievable sports fan base and sort of the fans we already have but also more fans," Latimer said. "For us, we're always looking at what's next, and we think it fits within our culture, and we're just excited about it from a company standpoint. We really think there's a tremendous opportunity."

Can definitely see the clear generational divide in here.

This is awesome to me. I'm a huge CS:GO and Overwatch player so it's awesome to see my favourite sports franchise parent company invest in it.

The pro video game industry is booming right now making millions and millions across multiple games. World Electronic Sports Games 2016 had a prize pool of over 1.5 million for the competitors. ELeague, which airs on TBS and is a league for 24 teams, has had a pize pool of 1.4 and 1.1 million dollars in it's first two seasons and is doing surprisingly well ratings wise.

League of Legends brings in millions of dollars in their two official leagues in North America and Europe. Their World Championship averaged over 5 million viewers a day for the four week period. I think they had over 330 million views over the four weeks.

That's cool, I've never heard of Splyce (mostly used to follow the starcraft scene and now heroes of the storm a lil' bit). I think the old farts that are dumping on professional video game players are dating themselves these kids will be making bank in 10-15 years once this stuff takes over.

DOTA pays out $$$ in its top tournaments and Starcraft is the national sport of Korea for crying out loud.

Watching other people play video games sounds absolutely amazing! Sign me up!

Honesty the only thing worse than playing video games would be to watch someone play them.

You guys are right, elite athletes = fat guys with no social skills.

Not sure who was talking about elite atheletes... Most of the professional gamers are skinny asians with glasses, but I guess your perspective should be expected on forum like this.

It's an emerging market in the entertainment industry and any corporation with business interests that even slightly align with tech, gaming, or entertainment are getting on board (Esports is The Next Billion Dollar Industry: 3 Stocks to Watch). It's a smart play for Delaware North, getting in on the ground floor of something that is making lots of money around the world. It's a matter of time before it takes off here in the US. Heck, eSports World Championships already pull in as many or more viewers than sports championships.

Didn't say anything about it being a bad business decision. Just have to laugh at people's definition of entertainment, although I guess I that's why we have the Kardashians and Instagram.

Surely they can get Gillette in on some sponsorship. Massive need for razors for all the neckbeards who will be participating and watching.

I'm not into e-sports, but some people here need to step back and take an introspective look at themselves before they bash something that is gaining in popularity and that people enjoy. You're posting on an internet message board about a bunch of guys younger than yourself (more than likely) playing a kids game. Playing video games is like anything else competitively. There are great players, and people want to watch those players.

The attention and money that e-sports has been getting is really astounding. It's going to keep growing as the current Youtube streamer generation gets older. This is a good move for the Delaware North company. Good to jump on now as it could pay off down the line.

My apologies.

Yup, I've got the worlds worst neck beard.

Can't grow anything above the chin.

The "I'm a jobless, early 20's, basement dwelling, fat ass, neck beard, mouth breathing" video game player stereotype is long gone. Time to catch up to where society is heading.
