Bruins extend GM Don Sweeney

Its really tough sometimes...it really is. Mathieu Darche would have been a breath of fresh air here but he never played for the Bruins. So I guess I get why they'd pass...

Can someone bring the friggin Whalers back please?

Why not re-sign him? They only came in last place in the Eastern conference last year.

Maybe this is hopium, but he and Neely were on expiring contracts and NHL teams seem to avoid lame duck execs like the plague, so two years seems close to the least amount of confidence an extension can convey. The leash might not have gotten too much longer with this. Let's see.

Why? He gave up Marchand for peanuts when Marchand would have happily re-signed. Now he's likely going to lead Florida to the finals and maybe a cup. Great job there.

Well, 2 years isn't exactly a "ringing endorsement" giving how these kinds of contracts usually go. I can see how ANY extension wouldn't be very popular with fans of the team. But it's also kind of a warning shot at least? :dunno:

With 1 year to go, you either terminate the person or extend him. You never let someone go into the final year of their contract as a lame duck. Every year you need to evaluate the GM position because one bad move can wreck your team.

Can't have a GM on the "hot seat" otherwise, they make a bad move to try to save their job.

Benning and the Canucks in 2021, after a dismal 20/21 Covid season, went out and dumped $12 mill of soon to be UFA contracts for 2022 for OEL and Garland and also sent a 1st and 2nd. The first was Guenther and they ended up buying out OEL.
