-Definitive decision by Alfie expected by Sunday (likely Fri/Sat)
-Unsure about a 2yr deal for Alfie, will depend on what he says
-MM9 went to doctor in germany, had rehab, didn't have surgery on knee, should know status after 4-5 weeks
-Fair amount of pre-draft trade chatter. Has had conversations about moving up and one about moving back. Thinks it will be costly to move up too far, teams don't want to drop back that far.
-Again mentioned high salary guys that don't fit budget on tight-cap teams, having conversations on a few of those
-Not really sure what they want to add apart from a little extra scoring
-A number of managers have indicated the Sens are a 'perfect target' due to # of young players/near-NHL ready players
-In a comfortable position to be able to take a lot of incoming calls, and no impetus to make a move considering all young players (ie Zibby)
-With Gonch leaving, happy with depth but always want a lot of d-men. Patty W was told that a slot opened if he can improve and get stronger. Has been around a lot since season finished trying to improve strength.
-Boro and Ceci give us quality. Inlcuding them, think they have 8-10 guys that can play in the league (d-men) in the next year or two
-If they stay at #17, they have 4 names that Pierre would be happy with. Think they can get at least 1. Probably not going to get an NHL-ready player right away, likely to give them another year in junior.
-Some good players but not necessarily one of the best drafts like others have said. Thinks its a decent first round with plenty of players at #17.

Interesting - everything I've read has been really positive on the quality of the draft. Certainly the descriptions/scouting reports on the players seemed more positive than the average draft, IMO.

It certainly seemed to me that we would have a fair number of worthy guys to pick from at 17, even if no one falls in the draft. This usually isnt the case.

Makes me feel as though they're downplaying the draft so as not to compromise their position in trying to move up.

So does this mean that they're working out 1 year vs 2 years, or is retirement still on the table?

I thought Ceci was 4 years away ?!? Hahahaha

Nizzy:

I was figuring 3 yrs for Ceci to learn to become a NHL D-man yes some prospects on the blue line can take 4 yrs.

I hope Ceci can be ready in 2 ½ seasons but no real hurry when he is ready a spot up top will be waiting for him..................

sorry, I realize this was a little misleading. Murray was asked if its possible that he'll offer a 2yr deal and he replied that it would depend on what Alfie's camp was saying/how he felt when he made his decision. Murrary did not suggest that a 2yr deal was what they were after and/or likely.

even if alfie does agree to a two year it wont be much different from a one year, he will still go on his little fit at the end of the season and debate retiring, so in this case a 2 year really means nothing..

Not really.

A two year contract would mean that if Alfie retired after the end of the first year, Ottawa would still be stuck with Alfie's cap hit the second year, even if he didn't play.

Surprised Alfie will decide by Sunday, took him so much longer last year.

I think the difference is that this year Murray wants to be making a splash, where as last year it was more status quo as the team was growing. Alfie's decision this year will have a large impact on how BM will approach trades/free agency, so whether he was asked to commit earlier or he choose to on his own accord I believe this is the major reason why.

He has to let the team know by July 1 because that's when the free agent market opens up. Sunday is June 30. It's the last day he can notify the team.

Solid in the first round in fact above average first round. But there has been talk that beyond the first it's slim pickings. I'm pretty sure that's what BM meant.

To me, the only really above average aspect of this draft is the top 8.

The rest is pretty average to me.

I always kind of look at the players in tiers. Top 8, then the next tier is about 8-10 players then the 3rd tier.

Doubtful we get a 1st tier guy, but hopefully we can nab a guy in the 2nd tier.

I agree , if Alfie is back we should be that much more willing to make a big move.

You're right. If he was to come back I think he would get around 3-4 million and the Sens don't spend to the cap like they used to, it is important.

However, last year he didn't notify the team until very late and he still counted toward the cap if he were to come back. Which would have also made it tough on us spending in free agency last year.

Murray specifically mentioned once in the interview that he might target someone with a higher cap hit on a team that is looking to move that said player. So Hemsky, Ryan fit that criteria.
