Now, we'll see how good of a coach he actually is. Assuming no Crosby he isn't going to have nearly as much to work with next year.

Most of the team that won gold this year was from the extremely deep 2003 draft (Phaneuf, Corburn, Richards, Carter, Bergeron, etc.). The 2006 entry will be primarily made up of the weaker 2004 draft and what would be the 2005 draft. And it appears given that Sidney Crosby will not be participating at the event even if there is no NHL, since his agent is looking into Europe and the AHL.

It's going to be a relatively younger team, with potential, but no experience at this event. And given that some of the top end talent like a Brule, Staal, etc. didn't play at the under 18's because of injury/playoffs the experience factor is again working against Canada.

But, Canada will put together a good team and with Sutter at the helm, they will compete, but won't dominate like they did in Grand Forks.

Sutter makes Canada that much better. While Crosby may not be back, Canada's class of 1987s is very strong. The 86s will be mostly complimentary. If the lockout continues, and Canada gets all their prospects back, Canada will dominate, not as much as last year, but they'll still be the class of the field. If the NHL is back, and Crosby and maybe Barker aren't back, it'll hurt, but Price, Brule, Latendresse, Bourret, Chipchura, Pouliot and a few others is a very nice starting point.

Canada isn't going to have nearly as good of a hockey team next year. This year was a fluke opportunity for Canada with the lockout (although I don't think that the lockout was as big a factor as much as it being a boomer crop of young talent).

Sutter is going to have less to work with regardless of the talent Canada usually provides out of the Junior rank. The entire #1 scoring line is gone. Bergeron isn't eligible and he will be in the NHL/AHL depending on the lockout. Perry isn't eligible and he will be in the AHL. Crosby is eligible and he will be in either the NHL/AHL...although you never know if he will be asked to come and play which is a possibility. So at the most you have 1/3 of your top scorers. Richards and Carter are gone who were important role player/scorers. Your defense is gone too.

It is going to be a green team and there really isn't going to be a bonafied superstar prospect on the team (well I guess things can change in a year as someone could explode over the first few months of the season and put up massive numbers).

It will be a great test of Sutter's abilities as a coach and will be a big determining factor as to whether Sutter gets a shot at the NHL some day. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a shot even if he doesn't win (the fact that he has successful family at the NHL is a bonus) but it would probably take longer for him to get his opportunity. A lot is on the line as far as Brent's reputation as a coach. Although I am sure that in the very back of his mind he probably wants this just as much to prove that he can win the tournament through his coaching ability. This past year he just had to go to Crosby, Bergeron, and Perry and say go score. Or to Richards and say block a shot, smash your man into the boards and break out on a shorthanded 2 on 1 and score.

A good choice, just the kind of coach a new team will need to settle them down. They'll be strong........not like last year of course, those kind of teams only come around once in a blue moon for anyone. But they'll be competitive and have a chance to win the whole thing like any other year.
