Plenty of smoke with 2 articles published this evening in the Athletic speculating the deal.

My guess:

Schenn for 2026 1st + Domi + Danford

Actually as far as a deal that’s probably reasonable?

But honest question. If you were to pick schenn or o Rielly who is better?

The Leafs are going to have Timmins, Benoit, Myers in their defence next game and we want to trade one of the better assets (2026 1st) for an aging declining center?

You’re not wrong to view it like that, so excuse the laughing emote. But Schenn to Leafs this year makes them favourites IMO

I guess you don’t see it and fair enough
Hey I like Schenn. But 2 firsts in value with that contract seems a little rich. Even if we are asking the Blues to take back Domi.
And it would create some cap issues this season and next.
If the Blues wanted to retain 3M so his hit was the same as Domi’s it would make more sense from our end but that would be a huge ask with the term left on his deal.

It’s probably close to a coin flip. I think Schenn has a little more left in the tank. Schenn probably holds a little more playoff value at this point because the skills of ROR aren’t what they used to be.

I’m a Leafs fan and I’m not sure Danford has that much value (I.e the equivalent of a first round pick). If he does, I’d rather add a bit more to the package above to reel in a bigger fish.

With the cap going up, and Tavares and Marner being UFA's, I see Schenn as a good fit for Toronto. Get a playoff run with Schenn, and hopefully some more runs with the cap space.

I'd rank Danford as a B prospect today.

I'd probably do it but I'd prefer Kampf be in it instead of Domi.

Because then you can move Domi to the wing where he should have been all year then you got

Knies Matthews Marner

McMann Tavares Nylander

Domi Schenn ?

I'm tempted to put Robertson in that spot but with Jarnkrok coming back I'm not sure.

But regardless I think that's a championship caliber top 9.

People say they need a 3C and a winger, but I think if you can get a 3C you can move Domi to the wing and that kills 2 birds with 1
stone.

But it's not unfair in fact like I said I'd probably do it.

Leafs would need about 1.5 in retention but I would do this in a heart beat if I was Leaf managment. 2026 1st and Danford are both not relevent to helping this current core. Domi is a one trick pony (assists).

What cap space? You’re assuming Tavares and Marner are going anywhere other than being in Toronto?
The net gain of those contracts are actually going to be a plus. Tavares down about 4 million and Marner up about 2.5.

Schenn plays his 1000th game tonight vs Caps. Smart play is him gone after that......50% retain, throw in Suter, or Sunny.

Where there's smoke there's fire. So I think something could happen with Schenn to Toronto.

I'd like it if the deal could include some retention on Schenn. Or perhaps a useful defenseman could be included in the deal.

The offer in the OP is close as it is. But I don't love it because Schenn's season (and last) isn't too productive. And it's not like it'll get better being the 3rd fiddle in Toronto's list of centers.

The Blues will get the first they think will be the highest. Where will the Leafs’ first likely fall on draft day?

I think - value argument aside - I think we could see the blues retain half a mil to 1.5. I’m not saying I think that makes the deal fair. I’m having a hard time with this one. I personally think the Canucks are the bid to beat and I don’t think anybody else can come close. They have more specific need - Schenn is kind of an ideal JT Miller-Lite, more options for the return, less cap challenges to handle the deal - especially the 2 Schenns part. They both train in BC. It doesn’t seem realistic to me for the leafs to fit 2 Schenns into their cap no matter how generous the trading partners - both of whom are smaller market/revenue clubs which would both be asked to retain a lot for a while. I think Vancouver is the one trying to 2 Schenn the deadline, and maybe the necessary strategy for any chance at getting them to waive their clauses.

I also think you all would get a defenseman back if the trade included a defensive prospect. I think we’d give you something that was closer to or already was ready for nhl minutes. Maybe the prospect going to stl would have a bit higher pedigree? Maybe not. I think it would be more about getting the leafs better on the ice and us better in the future. We wouldn’t be able to ship you crap in this instance.

Imo given the Blues franchise’s historic record; I think the chances of 50% retention are very low. I don’t think they would pursue deals that required this structure. I’m wrong a lot and im pretty confident on this one so it’s a great moment to put me in my place.
