Ducks currently have a decent amount of cap space, a Shattenkirk that needs coverage, and a bunch of prospects that need a bit of protection.

We're not contenders, so we wouldn't be looking for a potential top pairing guy. We need someone who can be good in his own zone on the bottom pairing when Shattenkirk inevitably goes for a wander in the OZ.

Cap dumps are fine by us, but we'll also take any prospects that are stuck behind a loaded pipeline.

Maatta's on an expiring contract. If the Kings are looking to open up a spot in the lineup for Bjornfot...

Holden's on an expiring contract. If the Sens are looking to open up a spot in the lineup for Brannstrom...

Russel's on an expiring contract. If the Oilers are looking to open up a spot in the lineup for Broberg...

Basically any LD on an expiring contract playing on a team who may want to open up a spot in their lineup for a younger LD whose last name begins with B...

It would be ideal to add a steadying presence, someone who could step up and eat top 4 minutes if/when one of Lindholm/Fowler go down, otherwise anchoring the bottom pairing defensively. Some physicality would be a great bonus.

Keep in mind that Hutton was in on an PTO but not signed, Pateryn is under contract but was waived and sent down. Jacob Larsson also was waived and demoted. So it stands to reason that the Ducks aren't going to give up any sort of asset for low end 6/7 roster filler types. They have a spot they could shore up with an actual upgrade.

No point in adding anyone, we aren't competing. Let the young players in the system (Benoit, Mahura, Larsson, Guhle) compete to nail the spot down or just play Pateryn if none of them can

None of them have proven they can consistently hold that spot. Benoit is the only one who hasn't seen enough time for me to establish an opinion on.

Pateryn's a disaster in his own zone. We need a steady presence, not an absolute pylon.

Pateryn was so bad for the Avs, they went out and traded for the very awful Pat Nemeth. Who is now a disaster on the NYR.

Ducks should have made a play for Ryan Graves. He’s a great bottom pair type. Great size, active stick, good skater and willing PK guy and shot blocker that can’t pass to save his life either.
