I think its the LW on that line. He was fine offensively when Zubie was on that line

They haven't had a real line this season yet. It's a damn shame really. Add in Kovy who can't be fresh playing upper 20s each game and you're left with a troubled EV line.

I don't like Matteau on that line because he isn't fully trusted by Kovy or Zajac yet

That line has been playing a 2/1 forecheck with Zajac and Matteau low and Kovy up high/in the slot and Zajac has often been caught working by himself down low giving the opposition an easier exit out of the zone

Not saying Matteau hasn't been doing his job, he's done exceptional for an 18 year old, but he is coming into the NHL and learning a system that isn't the easiest to pick right up

What were the SOG in OT? 2 to 1 us? Seemed like Boston had the chances.

Even with the PP goal, I hate our new PP system.

Mostly because they have been passing up shots and I don't like Kovy on the right hand side-which he is at times with Zidlicky on the left.

When Zajac or Clarky were in the middle of the triangle they did not look to shoot too, facing back towards the point.

Easy PP to defend.

+1.

Feel like we are minimizing one of our best assets in Kovy's one timer on the left.

I think there was only 1 PP where he was on the left side predominantly.

Tonight was our chance to win in Boston with them on the back end of a back to back.

Still PO'd with Josefson-Zajac-Kovy all getting caught behind the Boston the net that led to a 3 on 2 against and of course the Bruins goal.
When you have a lead and less than 5 minutes left in the game, one of the forwards has to stay high to prevent an odd man rush.

at the very least.....I would've signed up for getting a point which we did.

Considering how Boston always owned us last year and the Devils end up getting nothing for their troubles, this was the best-case scenario short of holding on for a 1-0 shutout.....

But we do need another forward...BADLY.

I really wish we re-signed Sykie. He may have burned out toward the end of the year but he was instrumental during the start of the year last season in providing some offense....

Oh well....

uh ....wasnt the first play of the game an icing? i lost it when it happened after all the talk about it.

Would you rather an icing or a dumb pass or a turnover?

I don't get what the complaining about icing the puck is. It's a safe play, allows you to restart over, if you win the faceoff, then it's easier to break out of the zone. It's not like we do it an abnormal amount of times.

If we could get the PP working I think we can do a lot better in games, and we'd be scoring a lot more goals. We've gotten plenty of practice on it during games right now already!

It's funny we've scored PP goals in 4 straight games now. 2 of them were two man advantages though.

Yep. That top line needs an actual top line NHL winger. It's killing off our top line of offense right now and we don't have much offense to begin with. Zubrus-Elias-Clarkson and I dunno what else really.

4th line is makeshift and barely plays and CGBG is playing a line too high although they played well tonight and controlled the play for several shifts.

The Devils really just need to do a few things:

A. Get someone for to play with Zajac and Kovalchuk.
B. Find a way to get CBGB line as the fourth line (Connected to A).
C. Flip a defender for a forward (connected to both A and B).

Right now I see it like this, when all is healthy:

?????-Zajac-Kovalchuk
Elias-Henrique-Clarkson
Zubrus-Josefson-?????
Carter-Gionta-Bernier

Signing Darche or flipping Tallinder for someone like Halischuk fills the third line void. Or package him for someone like Setoguchi to fill in on the top line. Only problem is Setoguchi is a RW and a righty. Devils like the lefties on the left side and vice versa. Only way around that is moving Henrique to wing, keeping Elias at center and putting Clarkson on the third line:

Henrique-Zajac-Kovalchuk
Zubrus-Elias-Setoguchi
???? (Darche)-Josefson-Clarkson

I think it's painfully obvious that Tallinder has proven that he is the odd man out. He was the main reason why Boston scored in the 3rd and made a lot of sloppy plays during the game. You mean to tell me that Tallinder is more of an asset to this New Jersey Devils team then the more aggressive Volchenkov? Please.

Package Tallinder and Tedenby with a pick for Setoguchi or Hemsky. Someone. Anyone. And I hope Lou doesn't package one of our best defensive prospects in Jon Merrill for a forward. Unless someone substantial comes our way in return I wouldn't even consider it.

Zubrus/Elias-Zajac-Kovalchuk
Elias/Zubrus Henrique-Setoguchi
Darche/Mattteau-Josefson-Clarkson
CBJB

A lot of options with that lineup but you are bound to find one that clicks.

Matteau will not be on that line for long and that has no bearing on whether he goes back to the Q or not. Pete has been trying different looks, letting the younger guys get a look with real talent next to them instead of the likes of Cam. Only been 5 games and the depth is thin. Don't blame Pete for trying different looks with the younger players, get an idea of what he has. Things will sort out when we add depth in Henrique and whomever Lou trades for.

Agree we need scoring, but I think you guys are going way overboard with it. Make it sound like we re getting shutout every night. We have plenty of talent that can score, just need a bit more depth to slot some guys down the depth chart and spread things out a bit more. Henrique will be a big part of that, hopefully Lou will provide someone good with some finish as well. After that I don't think we would need any world beater type of forward, just a solid 2 way grinder for the third line. Whether that is Darche, Matteau, Anderson, Butler, whomever.

CBGB actually looked pretty good tonight. They had a bunch of solid shifts. Clarkson had a really good game. Moose was excellent, but I still think that goal could of been stopped. He shouldn't of had to if Kovy back checked harder, and Tally's stick did deflect it a bit, but it did look a bit soft. Still overall he looked great.

The Josefson love-fest on here is getting out of hand. On what planet is he "sensational defensively"? He gave the puck up multiple times tonight and directly cost us a goal against Montreal. As another poster said on here, he isn't strong on the puck and his offense is atrocious. I think Jo is good on the PK, but I'm pretty sure he isn't going to be anything more than a 4th line center, maybe 3rd.

12 goals in 5 games isn't going to cut it.

Zubrus - Zajac - Kovalchuk
Butler - Elias - Clarkson
Carter - Gionta - Bernier
xxx - Josefson - Barch

Send Matteau back to juniors, play Larsson as the 7th defenseman time being. Hopefully we jettison one of our extraneous d-men and get a competent top/bottom six forward in return. Don't want Darche, Setoguchi would be nice but seems like a pipe dream.

Once Henrique gets back and CBGB is back on the fourth line I don't think it looks that bad.

Isles are looking good, but they always give the Pens a hard time.

Maybe we'll be lucky enough for them to use trash can Rick one of these games!

Zajac and Kovy are nearly neutralized in games against good teams because they do not have a winger to play with assuming the 2nd line stays together. That is a problem causing depth, it isn't something to gloss over at all.

I need to see the play again but I still think it's ridiculous to say Tallinder was at fault on the last goal.

yep watched that shootout attempt over and over again, should have been awarded a goal. Give the memo to goalies to just take out players feet in shootouts now, guess it's legal.

It deflected off Tallinder's stick, but I don't blame him nor Moose. We all have seen Mike Mottau deflect so many goals for the opposition while he was here.

I agree with you on the neutralization of Kovy, and Trav. If Matteau goes back and I think he will, then who plays? Matt Anderson? Darche if he gets signed? You think it's funny but let's be serious. If someone told you Matteau would start two games on the 1st line last week what would you say to them?

a loaded question. (by 'lost it' i meant laughed hard, not pissed off)

personally i dont really care if the team has 1 or 50 icings a game. i want points and solid TEAM play overall. for the record, i wasnt one of the crying bunch over it.
