He signed a PTO, then hung around a bit for Boston to accrue enough cap space and was signed to a contract.

I think ultimately there's just a mutual understanding that Johnson isn't interested in playing in the AHL and hanging around and he'd rather be a free agent/likely call it a career rather than ride the waiver bus hoping for another opportunity.

Is there going to be more to this? this seems odd.

I never understand why players agree to have their contract terminated it makes no sense why give up the money?

It’s probably not about the money for him. He’s made good coin as an NHLer.

They likely agreed when he signed that if it didn’t work out then a mutual termination instead of being sent to the AHL.

Can teams just fire players like this? I always thought the CBA existed to protect players from being "fired" like this unless there was some form of breach. Like why isn't this a buyout?

It's a mutual contract termination. Johnson has to have agreed to it. Perhaps he's got a deal lined up in the Swiss league that will offset the salary he's forfeiting?

It wasn't mentioned in Johnston's tweet but it is mutual termination so both sides agreed to it.

Zach Bogosian left a little money on the table and agreed to terminate his deal in Buffalo. Even with retention his contract was too much for contenders to add. Bogosian signed a lesser deal for the remainder of the season with Tampa and got a Cup.

In Johnson's case, he probably is the odd man out after Boston claimed Oliver Wahlstrom on waivers. It might come down to Johnson not really wanting to ride the buses in the AHL while collecting his paycheck. As others mentioned, he's made plenty of money on previous contracts so this might just be one step closer to retirement. He just got married a few months ago, so perhaps moving on to the next phase of his life?

Merry Christmas, Tyler! You're making league minimum and we could have done this in early January, but we wanted to sneak it in before the roster freeze!

Or you could frame it as the reality that they kept him around a few extra games of paychecks after claiming Wahlstrom. Or you can talk radio make up make believe drama.
