Armstrong wasn’t happy with the POJ/Kessel pairing in the San Jose game and did something about it quick.

Broberg-Parayko
Fowler-Faulk
Sutter-Peru/POJ/Kessel

I wonder when Loof gets a cup of tea….

What’s Fowler contract like how long is he with us?

He’s in the last 2 years of his contract and is coming to us at around $4M with the Ducks retaining on his contract.

He has a year and a half.

Also - he has some form of trade protection. I think he could have said no.

Odd move to spend draft capital for a vet unless Leddy had a major setback and all we’ve heard lately is how close he was. Leddy-Parayko, Broberg-Faulk, Peru-Kessel isn’t ideal but it’s adequate for this year. Monty likes his defenseman to be able to skate and be aggressive so there will be change in personnel to suit his system over time but this team still isn’t close to contending and there is a process that shouldn’t be short circuited. Regardless, will be interesting where Fowler slots.
Leddy was sent home in the middle of the road trip. So he did have some sort of setback.

Army seems to like him, wasn’t there reports of a Fowler Krug swap that was canned because of the Krug injury news?
That at least made some sort of sense though. Both signed for the same amount of money and Fowler is a much better skater. So I could see swapping out Krug for Fowler. But Fowler on his own is kind of puzzling.

Yeah, I'm expecting Leddy to go on LTIR for a surgery soon. He had a setback and was sent home.

If the contract only runs through the end of next season, I actually really like this as a bold move to solidify the backend and push this team into the playoffs. Count me in the camp that believes it's in the best interest for the long term development of the current upcoming core of youth to get their beaks wet by getting a taste of playoff hockey rather than intentionally delaying our resurfacing in the postseason by another couple years while we wait for Dvo, Snugg and Lindstein to get comfortable in their professional skin. Bro and Holloway in particular would benefit after being in the finals last year, now with the opportunity to play larger playoff roles on a young team.

Now that Monty is at the helm, it's hard to see us bottoming out to the point of landing one of those top 3-6 picks, especially if Nashville decides to start blowing it up over the next couple months. Might as well go for it and try to get in and steal a round. Also seems like a positive mental chess move by Army to Monty and the team. He thinks they're good enough to compete and is willing to show his faith in that by adding a piece. Might as well enjoy the ride. Kind of reminiscent of Caron's wheeling and dealing back in the late 80's and 90's.

We also shouldn’t underestimate his excitement of getting out of that hell scape in Anaheim. Friedman was talking on a recent pod about how much Fowler wanted out.

Wonder how the PP units play out now. I'd assume we utilize Fowler there.
Broberg/Fowler on units 1 and 2. Parayko should never see the power play and Faulk isn’t good in this role anymore.

This makes no sense. Especially since he has next year too. Why did we pay to take him?

Not to mention that 2027 2nd could be a very high pick.

A revitalized Fowler at 4 mill most likely playing with an elite defensive partner in Parayko makes so much sense. Masterclass move by army in my opinion on a very capable 40+ pt D who’s eaten 24+ minutes a night year after year on top of the contract being perfectly aligned with the steen era beginning.

Love it.

We’re trying to compete, his contract is only 4 mill and he’s instantly the best or at minimum the 2nd best LHD on the team.

Fowler hasn’t been good this year, but I think he will look better on the Blues. He is still an elite level technical skater (not super fast, but fantastic on his edges). He is very elusive, allowing him to evade pressure when he has the time and space to move. He has decent offensive instincts and can play on your power play.

However, he can be frustrating to watch at times. He avoids contact more than any defenseman I’ve seen. His skating is good enough to get away with it sometimes, but it will annoy you. He also plays way too safe and cautious sometimes, even though his skating ability should afford him some room to take risks. And while his shot can be dangerous from the blue line, it’s not very hard and will get blocked at an above average rate.

Lose at home to the Sharks and the thought is “yea this will get us all the way into the playoffs”. 2nd round picks should not be given away for nothing. Nor should cap space.

Question could we trade Fowler at the deadline?

1-you think entirely too highly of 2024 Cam Fowler

2-teams trying to compete don’t lose to the Sharks at home.

Appreciate the scouting report, thanks!

Sounds a lot like Nick Leddy in some ways (top end skating but not overly physical).

Not sure why we needed to make this trade even with Leddy presumably out. Rather have the second. We continue to place value in near or washed vets to help in the short term for some reason.

Not sure I fully grasp this one. With the Blues sending down Kessel is the plan to play him on the right side? I know he has played his off hand before.

As others have mentioned this likely means the end of the season for Leddy? Have to imagine next year we see Suter retire. If healthy do we run this defense?

Broberg - Parayko
Krug - Faulk
Leddy - Fowler

I know neither POJ or Perunovich have really solidified a spot but that is a lot of aging defense.

There’s a reason Ducks’ fans are rejoicing this trade. Maybe Fowler will look better alongside an established partner, but he’s Charmin-soft and has a lot of mileage. As a third-pairing upgrade, he’d be excellent. As a top-pairing stop-gap he’s pretty uninspiring. Maybe he can be flipped in the offseason or next years trade-deadline after a better option is brought in.

I do like the trade for Verbeek’s perspective. He upgraded a fourth to a second in a cap dump. Well done.
