Blues trade: Kevin Shattenkirk (UFA)

Habs trade: Tomas Plekanec + Noah Juulsen

Shattenkirk is a UFA (take this into account with his value) so this puts Habs in a win now mode. Blues get a solid veteran 2C (Hitch loves hits vets) and good defensive prospect.

That's a lot to give up for a pending UFA, Who may or may not resign. Doubt MB would do it.

That's a lot of cap space going to the Blues for next season on a player who seems to be in decline and is a just an older Stastny type. I think they'd rather keep that money to sign Shattenkirk, or a replacement.

Shattenkirk is amazing, but man, how much cap space do you want to put in the d-corps?

Yea don't see either team being interested in this

I kinda agree with this. If Shatty was playing left side, i would say big yess from Habs POV. But don't think Plekanec is a fit for St-Louis right now.

Maybe at deadline but doubt Shattenkirk is going somewherre if St-Louis is in the race.

Ooo, didn't realize he's a righty. this really doesn't make sense for either team. Habs aren't putting Petry on the 3rd pairing. He's been great.

Exactly.

We have limited cap space and not that much of trade chips to spare with.

I'm pretty sure the only move MB would do is for a top 3 LHD, maybe at deadline considering the lack of cap sapce.

Montreals center depth is absolutely atrocious if the lose Plekanec and dont get a top 9 NHL center in return

For the idea of getting Shatty for "win now" mode, that center depth ensures they would never get beyond the 2nd round, IF they find a way to get out of the first

They would get eaten alive with playoff matchups down the middle

That's an insane price for an impending UFA. On the other hand, that really does nothing at all for St Louis. It's a no on both sides.

The whole point of the Blues moving Shatty was to reduce the cap hit he'd have on the team, while potentially getting a higher end prospect/player back.

This deal doesn't help that in any way. Not only do the Blues have enough #2 Cs, but they also would rather just resign Shatty for a similar hit to what Plekanec would be bringing to the team.

The defensive prospect does nothing for Stl, as we've already got a number of good looking defensive prospects. We are searching for more higher end forward prospects.

And all the comments about wishing Shatty could play the left side are also pretty funny. If he could play the left side the Blues wouldn't be interested in moving him in the slightest.

Just does not work for the Blues at all, and really doesn't make much sense from Montreal's perspective either.

That is a horrible trade for the Habs, when is the last time someone traded a 50-point C and a solid D prospect for a UFA defenseman?

Plekanec continues to be severely underrated, a rocky start to the year does not make him an expendable asset given the center depth we have. It does not work for St Louis either
